New tire pains

Some jackass left a screw in the road and I managed to find it.

I thought some might want to know a new front right tire cost me $554.51 (installed). (Strangely, a new front left tire would've been a bit more, according to The Tire Rack.)

Hopefully the new one lasts more than 600 miles.

Wouldn't it be great if we could figure out who did it and send them the bill??? Or send them to jail. Maybe that's too harsh.

Not really....that's a lot $$ of which could have been put to better use. The more screw or nail in tire replacement threads I read the more I wish I'd of kept the tire/wheel insurance the dealer was offering. It would have paid for itself on the first tire.

ouch. these tires are only $389 shipped from tire rack. they offer road hazard for $30 a tire.

tire places suck IMO. I got re-ended in my 300c. had 285/35-22 toyo's. only needed one tire got a $450 quote from les schwab told them no way. went to a les scwab 10 miles away asked for a quote for 4 tires it was 238 per tire. just bought one at $238.

same company just asked for the price for 4 instead of one. saved $200.

That is the way to go right there! I'll be getting a 1LE soon to replace my SS. I bought the road side and haven't used it once, waste of money for me.

Another reason why I would have purchased the tire/rim warranty for these cars no brainer 1 replacement time covers the cost.

I did a tire warranty on my car. (and I never buy extended warranties.) 3 years and it covers the car not the specific tires. So damage done to any tire or rim on the car is covered. One nail and it is paid for. Cost me $2 a month. With the number if people getting punctures I am glad I did.

The tire/wheel warranty would have been good, but it was $845 at my dealership and I've never needed one before, so I passed. It's still wouldn't have paid for itself. Now that I've said that, I'll probably get another flat on the way home...

Yes, I saw the Tire Rack price, too. I'm consoling myself that shipping would have been expensive and then I would've had to add labor for the install and balancing, so I'm not sure the tire shop I used was out of line. (I do, however, think the nitrogen they used, and charged me for, is a scam. The air is mostly N2 anyway.)

That's ridiculous that a chain tire place varied so much by location.

One bright side - while I was at the tire place, some guy was there getting work done to his Ferrari 612, flat black. I had never seen one before; very cool!

All three of my cars have it, just for that reason ... You just never know and things have a way of biting me what I don't cover them.

There is another thread about a high number of people getting nails in tires. I also had to replace a tire within the first 600 miles.

...roadways can be an unfortunate nuisance for bolts, screws, and nails, when I drive I am lookiing for foreign substances on the road and often see bolts and screws and avoid them...but also I would like to mention one has to be wary of home improvement store parking lots....I see them more often than not laying about there.

that price I quoted was shipped. MT balance would have been $15 or so.

Like I said they always take you for a ride when buying one tire. on that rear end insurance job they wanted to just kill me on the price. I had a a day two so I was able to just go to the less schwab I bougtht the tires from originally and they gave the 4 tire price on one. I wanted to choke the guy out that quoted me $450 a tire. I am looking at my orginal reciept at $238 going????

sometimes you just need it now and have to pay it.

On my motorcycles I only replace damaged tires(for obvious reasons), but for a car I don't understand why you don't have it repaired? Am I missing something?

Nail in the sidewall cannot be repaired... that would be one reason. Then other would be doing 150+ on a patched tire.

BTW My tire/rim warranty was $400 but they offered a .5% discount on my loan interest rate making the effective cost under $150.00 to me due to that discount.

I understand sidewall damage but unless your tracking your car is it an issue? I don't think an occasional high speed run warrants replacement. To each their own, but is it necessary?

Where is the best place to get a tire warranty? Should I check with my local dealer? Would my insurance agent be likely to offer a policy? Or AAA? Bought my car out of state so my local dealer wasn't involved in the sale.

I bought mine at time of purchase from my dealer. If you have a good relationship with your dealer you could ask them. (Even the out of state one should be able to offer one post purchase.)

Thanks for the suggestion. I will be looking into this. With tires this expensive, it makes sense to get this providing the cost is right..

Wow, looks like a big price difference in the tire/rim insurance from dealership to dealership. Had a screw puncture my SS tire and the filling station (Sunoco) told me it's out on the edge so the tire should be replaced. They said they will patch it, but it's 50/50 chance it may or may not hold. Cost me $20 and it held, but I never took it over a 100mph again. Didn't have the nerve to take the chance of the tire failing at high speed. Every time I drove the SS I've gone over 100mph, every time. That's what it's made for and not being able to do that, or should I say not willing to do that...that sucks...

So on the ZL1 it was a must to get the tire/rim insurance. Especially after everything I've read in the forum. Checked my tires thoroughly at the dealership and noticed two little bites in one tire. Size of a dime and not deep, but a little rubber chunk missing just from on/off loading I assume.

So anyone getting ready to make the deal, GET THE TIRE/RIM INSURANCE. ITS WORTH THE MONEY. You wouldn't take your ZL1 out on the street with no insurance coverage, would you? Clip a curb and not only your tire is damaged, the rim will really set you back. Was worth the peace of mind for me.

My dealership was asking $650 and I countered with $500 and he said okay. THE PRICE IS NEGOTIABLE, and if they are not budging just tell them you'll get it at another chevy dealership. Doesn't have to be bought at the same dealership. Once you say that they will be singing a different tune, they know they'll lose out and they will drop the price. Tell them to hold on a minute while you call the other dealership to get a price. Did that with my Tundra pickup while sitting there in the guys office, told them the other dealerships price (minus $50 for the aggravation). They said okay we will match that price.

Sometimes I think I'm just getting cheep in my old age. Tires is just one of those things I put off buying due to the price. Kinda like buying new jeans, pisses me off also. I liked the days when I could buy a pair of big bell Levis for $10 and call it a day. Right now I'm shopping for tires for my SS and Sky. The SS still has the original rubber on it.

Ouch...this is why I got the tire/rim warranty also - wouldn't normally go for that sort of thing but it made sense at these prices for tires!

Nailing It... And not in a good way. Less than 600 miles on the tires and about a week ago I noticed the front drivers tire down a couple of pounds. The other three tires were at 31 psi, but the drivers was at 28 psi. No big deal, started the compressor and added a few pounds. One week later, today, same thing, noticed it last nite, down a couple of pounds, again at 28 psi or so. So again I added a few pounds, but just didn't seem right that the other three have never moved, all at 31 psi, so I checked the tire very thoroughly and behold, looks like a nail or something in the tire groove two inches in more or less. Called Quick service dept to
set up a visit on Monday. They are checking around trying to locate a tire. A nail/screw in one of these high performance tires and the tire has to be replaced. Sounds crazy, but that's what they do, brand new tire coming.

The tire/rim warranty/insurance I purchased for $500 will pay for itself. Not even a month I've had the ZL1. I would be furious if I had to pay this out of pocket. Well worth the eight/nine bucks a month.

Had planned to go for a drive to Newport Rhode Island this Sunday, but I'll wait till the tire is replaced. Was really looking forward to racking up some miles this weekend. Oh we'll, looking forward to the next weekend. Who knows, it's a very very slow leak, just might take her for a nice ride anyway. Still in break-in mode so I wouldn't be going too fast. Can't wait to reach that 1,500 mile mark!

I was able to buy a five year tire/wheel warranty for $495 from my dealer, it's not right that they charge different rates for the same coverage.

I pissed my sales guy off because I wouldn't sign any papers until I had the extended warranty and tire warranty price guarantee, everything about the deal including the car and warranties can be bartered for.
