My car went through the exact same thing after first oil change at 1500 miles. Sat at dealer for 2 weeks until the engineers got involved and had the techs replace the rear main seal. Apparently its also a problem on some of the vette. We would smell burning oil after the car was up to temp and everytime we came to stop in like 30 second bursts. Its wasnt a constant odor of oil full time but was like the car was farting. There was no oil leaks on the car anywhere, just odor getting out of the RMS somehow. And yes the PCV system was fully checked and was working properly. You might have the same issue

I havnt smelled oil since I changed my oil but I do have a problem. When I have it on vent, all the way on the cold side,on recirc or not,it always blows warm air.Unless the temp is 50 or below,it seems to always blow warm air.

I had this problem with my SS after its first oil change. The smell did disappear over time. Same deal. No noticeable leaks or drips. (Dealer and I personally checked) I had the car for three years and it never leaked but the oil smell would occur after an oil change sometimes but not every time...

Do a search on this site I am certain there has been a post or two about this. It is not a ZL1 issue but a Camaro issue. My guess is the HVAC fresh air inlet is near a vent.

With my oil smell issue I could smell it both inside a sealed up car and also outside of the car. With the engine running and the car on a lift myself and the dealer tech would get a wiff of oil smell coming from the tranny bellhousing every few minutes...but again no visible leaks were found and replacing the rear main seal seems to have fixed the issue

I have this same problem. Seems to come and go when I come to a stop. Lasts a few seconds then seems to go away. I can't see any leaks or anything. The only place that seems to have a similar odor inside the engine compartment is the oil dipstick.

Having the same problem. Burning smell.. almost like rubber. Its coming from the engine bay/under the car (front).

1500 miles.

SS owner here. I smell oil every time I change the oil. It is very faint (smell it mostly when stopped) and goes away after a couple weeks. Same with all of you....no visible leaks and nothing on the ground when parked for a while.
Makes me wonder if the oil is slightly overfilled or something?

same here, I changed the oil about 250 miles ago , 6000 total and have smelled oil buring ever since. I am going to pull the bottom cover off this weekend to see if I find an oil leak, but I don't see anything on the garage floor. I'll tag this thread and follow to see if anything is found to correct this issue.

I always use Windex to dlean around the filter and drain plug before installing either of them in my cars after changing the oil. I hate smelling burning oil after a change. My '86 Monte Carlo SS always had the smell after an oil change too and I could never figure out why.

Im about to get my oil changed for the first time. Is there anything I should do to prevent this from happening. I have to say it sounds like a weird problem. Can't understand why an oil change would affect the rear main seal.. strange..

Nothing you can do. It just seems some cars get the oil smell syndrome and some dont. All I can tell you is if your car is gonna have it there will be no mistaking it and what they did to fix mine. My engine was run with the tranny out on the lift and there was no question the smell was emitted from the rear main seal even though there was no evidence of a leak at the seal

Haven't changed the oil yet. This is more of a faint burning rubber smell. My daughter thinks it smells like cheerios.

So did they change you rear main to fix the smell? did they describe it crank case fumes leaking past the seal basically?

If that is true it would explain what some people have been describing. Pain is the ass fix though.

when my car was brand new I know there were some odors sometiems but I though it was just stuff heat cycling. I have not driven mine enough lately do to the colder temps. I will definatly check to see if I can make it produce this odor.

My SS does the same thing. It's residual oil from removing the filter and getting some on the bottom of the pan and trans bell housing. No big deal. It goes away after a few 100 miles. Mine's done that every oil change so far..I've had 3 oil changes @ 2500 mile intervals.
My car doesn't leak a drop. But it does smell like burning oil because it is burning off the bottom of the pan.

I cant imagine that these people all are leaving oil that drips on the bell housing and the pan after an oil change. Even if they are doing that, it must be one hell of a hot bell housing and oil pan to burn oil.

I noticed the exact same thing on vent, its flat out warm air unless its below 50 out just like you said. It was 60 on the Pacific Coast highway 1 during a drive, and I had to run the air conditioner when I had the windows all the way up.

Wait until summer arrives. I have always kept my vent on in every car I own all the time, but it blows really hot air even on cool evenings during mild weather. Never had a car do this before and I posted this concern. Apparently it's normal, but smelling oil odors isn't.

Same here, driving home to San Diego when new, if I stopped hard I could smell oil. But can not find where it comes from??? I have smelled it a few times after and have 1000 miles now. I see no leaks.

I wonder now if it is the breaks that smell?
