2010 SS RS with OE Fog/HID bulb (REVISTED)
I wanted to start a new thread with pics for those that asked about the conversion. I have a 2010 2SS RS. I replaced my DRL lens and harness with the OE fog lens and harness. The 3rd party adapter harness connectors will work with both fog and DRLs. It just bridges the bumper connector to the body and taps the leads.
I swapped the lens because: (back in 2010) 1) Closer matching headlight to fog/drl 2) Gave up on cheaply made LED options for long term, main light, reliable use. (cheaply made does not necessarily mean cheaply priced) 3) Wanted focused light to minimize oncoming glare since I went HID 4) Fogs have aiming ability (DRLs are marker lights with fixed positions) 5) Fog HID bulb(5202 25-watt HID) were available in 2010. (P13W used generic glue in version) NOTE: I believe there are P13W mount HIDs now available. I would speculate the glare from HIDs in DRL housings would be irritating to oncoming drivers and cars in front. I don't have time to do a step-by-step instructions, but if you have some electrical understanding and measure twice/cut once approach, the mod is not that hard. Used dual SPDT relays with adapter harness. Tapped the DRL hot wire to trigger fog on during the day. Second relay wired to a negative ground switch for night operations. This method does multiple things. 1) Normal DRL-like operations using OE lighting controls 2) Independent night operations using manual switch 3) Avoid diodes and lazy wiring methods 4) Can easily be reverted back to OE with DRL or fog lens. I used a Napa(or O-Reilly) weather-proof power quick-disconnect on a dedicated line for the HID ballast power since the harness wiring is thin. The disconnect is velcro strapped to the harness adapter for easy disconnect when removing the bumper. The OE harness 5202 connector is not used unless I want to go back to OE for whatever reason. I could've kept the DRL harness with P13W connector, but wanted to be consistent. I am picky and anal retentive. Wrapped the open 5202 connector with water proof tape. I have tried OE 4.3k D1S w/4.3K 25-watt 5202 HIDs. And, 5K D1S w/5K 5202 HIDs. I like the 5K better. 6K is too blue for me. Harness info: I used Fieldgoal V1 harness modded for dual relays. He has since made a dual relay version, but moved to another forum. (google fieldgoal if interested) http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246733 I believe C5 vendors 2SSRS sells a single relay version and sjmautoprod has generic and custom ones. Fog lens(comes w/5202 bulb) and harness ordered from C5 vendor, GMPartHouse. (Patrick Both 2010-2011 fog/drl are plastic, not glass. 25-watt HIDs have not melted my fogs. Over 2 years of constant use. I rarely turn off the fogs during the day and leave them on at night. 5K HIDs Pic 1 Daytime Pic 2 headlight and fog (driver side 5202 leans a little warmer than passenger) Pic 3 Daytime close-up of fog (2-years of driving nicks and dirty lens) Pic 4 Dusk Pic 5 Headlight and Fog Pic 6 Headlight only Pic 7 Fog only Note: Fog aimed almost all the way down. You can almost see the beam pattern with the fogs from my crappy iPhone pics. |

Awesome. Thank you very much for the write up. Going to go send off a couple PM's and see if we can get these on their way to me. Thanks!
