Ohhhh....that kind of gator. First thing I thought was that you lived in Florida or Louisiana - cause that DOES happen from time to time. Those teeth can do a nasty job on the paint.

I can not help but laugh because this also was my first thought. I was thinking gator like the animal. Until I continued to read. I was about to say your lucky if that's all a live gator did your car.

Where did the term gator even come from to describe truck tire treads?

The treads on the tires resemble a gators back. I believe truck drivers came up with the term.

It is trucker lingo. They should actually be nicknamed crocodile. The term comes from the jagged edge on each side that resembles the back of a gator. A crocodile has a better example of this rather than the aligator.

We have herds of them down here in the summer. Retreads are a-poppin'! I drive through town when I take the Camaro to work.

Crocks are not native to the US. Gators are, thus the term "Gator" is more appropriate for the US.

I hit a mother trucking gator in the road when I first bought my car. Luckily it only scuffed up my lower rocker panel a little.

Had a road Gator thrown in front of me when driving my Sky twice. The first time it hit the top of the windshield just above my wife's head, a couple inches higher ant it would have come down inside the car and hit my wife in the face possibly killing her. The second time one was hit in the other lane and thrown in front of me, it hit on the right front busting my fog light then jamming in the wheel well causing the wheel to lock and throwing us into a spin. I did 2 360's at 70 mph in the middle of the crowded interstate, didn't hit anything and got the car back under control then pulled over in front of someone changing a tire. It was probably his blowout that hit me. We definitely had someone looking over us those days...

Nice legs OP.

Sorry, had to. That really sucks though. Retreads should be banned from use. It's completely unsafe with all the accidents they cause.

It's not just retreads, I have seen demos where under inflated new tires overheat and the tread separates from the body of the tire.

That sucks, but it took me a while to realize an alligator is a tire tread. Here in FL, an actual alligator isn't unheard of!

Maybe they should implement tire safety regulations for truck drivers that would promote proper tire inflation standards? I have no idea how this could be enforced, but ideally there would be fines in place if a truck driver is caught with under inflated tires, which is clearly a safety hazard to the driver and everyone that shares the road with him.

But I'm speaking on a subject I know nothing about. Just sayin'.

I looked at your info first to see if you were in FL....I thought it was a real gator too.

Sorry about your car, but like you said, at least it didn't hit your windshield and hurt anyone.

Not just truck tires, car tires too. I have seen people have blowouts in cars that leave this type debris too. Truck tires are usually bigger, but even car tires can also cause damage.

Crocks are certainly native to a small area in south FL and some of the northern keys . They are a totally protected species .
