Carbon fiber insert?

Where can I find an exposed carbon fiber insert for my new 2013 ZL1 vert that won't cost me an arm and a leg? When I bought my car out of state, I thought based on the sticker that I was getting the exposed carbon fiber insert but to my surprise when the car was delivered to my home it was painted gray. I was stuck with no options, I was told by the dealer that it would cost me $4,500 for a new insert, that is if they could find one.

I wonder if the painted one I have can have the paint removed and the carbon fiber be clear coated just like it should be? Does anybody have one for sale?

I have included pics of what I have and also of what I want.

One just sold on ebay for a little over 2,000 but that was from a damaged hood. They are not available to order anywhere other then GM and I don't even think they are off restraint right now. I'd say just have a LOT of patience or be happy with what you have.

I wonder if you could have a vinyl wrap applied that looks like carbon fiber?

This is what I was thinking, a decent vinyl shop should be able to wrap it for well under $500 I would think.

first I would offer it it up for trade. there are poeple who got carbon hoods that did not want it. offer your up gray or painted to match what ever color they want. some people wanted flat black and got carbon.

second I would look to carbon fiber vendor to see if they think ithe paint could be stripped and the carbon exposed.

the oem piece is expensive and I think those are your best option $$$ wise.

I'm pretty sure you can sand it down and remove the paint, the CF will be covered with resin, after that you just clear coat it.

Yes,
I want to offer up my painted gray hood insert up for trade, I will even have my insert painted to what ever color the person wants if I can receive the exposed carbon fiber (ECF) insert clear coated. This car has less than 400 miles and is always garaged. Just PM if anyone is interested!!

The exposed CF insert is a $600 option, the painted CF is standard.

As it was explained to us in the beginning, part of the reason the ECF costs more than the painted ones is that on the ECF inserts, they have to be very carefull when laying the carbon fiber to make sure the weave pattern is uniform and even throught the layers since it will be visible. Any minor imperfections would be very noticible,

Because of that, I'm not sure what the painted insert would loook like if you removed the layer of paint. You might not be happy with what you find.

VINYL......are you guys serious. EFF that. Take it to a good custom painter. He'll be able to lay a nice carbon fiber finish on that insert with no problem and it'll cost you way less than 2grand.

The exposed carbon fiber look is a trend/fade and will pass. It will be out as quickly as it came in. Save your money. I'll sell mine as soon as this fade is over. lol

How hard is it to remove the insert? I ordered mine a week ago with the ECF but now I'm not sure if I want it or not. I'm kind of liking the look of the AGM insert.
