Dear Owners: Talk Me In/Out of a 2010 Camaro

I'm 21, in college, and I just went down to the dealership today to test drive the 2010 Camaro. Admittedly, it was a V6 automatic, but it was enough for this little Asian guy to fall in love. I especially loved the "wholeness" of the package. It was luxurious, but yet fun to drive. Roll down the windows and I get all the noise and fun with it, but roll it back up, and the car is totally quiet.

Anywho, I've gotten all the numbers. Spoken to the dealership, etc., and can place an order with a downpayment of $500. I've got a solid quote right here for a 1SS Camaro RS 6-Speed MT in Silver, MSRP $31,535. With tax, registration fees, ARP of 5.9%, etc., I end up at about $35,000.

If I place my order now, I'll take delivery in September or so. I plan to have a final decision on the car by Wednesday.

I'm not familiar with the LS3 engine at all (my first and current car is a 2005 Mazda RX8, so I come from a rotary background).

I'm a performance enthusiast with about 2 years track driving experience, so I'm not too worried that I'll get killed in a 425HP fireball. However, if and when I get a Camaro, I won't be tracking the car for a few years at least (perhaps an autocross or two, that's about it).

So guys and gals, talk me in/out of it. Advantages, disadvantages, teething problems you've found, shit to look out for etc.

If anyone here has pics of the fabric seats in a 1SS, I'd be very grateful. I like the fabric in my RX-8 right now, but I'm not sure how Chevy fabric is.

I saw a black interior cloth the just two hours ago in a LT, it looks great. Thats what I ordered. I would say it comes down to your financial situation. Dont know how you can afford it in the middle of college. I can tell you another 5000 grand will cost you 100 or so dollars more a month

Take a look at all the magazine articles about the Camaro (except Car and Driver) they all say the same thing. Get a Camaro. For the money it's the best American performance car out there.

Well if the V6 was enough for you, I would go with the 1LT or 2LT. That would cut down on your payments and insurance. Anyway, I would not really recommend getting one yet unless you have a job lined up or have rich parents. But who am I too advise as I'm car shopping and unemployed, don't have any money right now and dealers still want to give me a loan! Granted I'm a little older, my credit is excellent and I have unemployment checks coming in to get me by. I'm just waiting for a really "good" deal to come along or I get the job offer in my interview next week and then I might jump on something. Although still not sure if it will be the 1LT, gencoupe 3.8, 2009 mustang gt or the wrx as they all have their pluses and minuses...

I have an RX-8 to trade in, and with a 60 month term, I can get away with a 1SS RS for 350/mo or so.

How I can afford it is a secret.

Unfortunately, given the Camaro's curb weight, the V6 would really be not much of an upgrade from the RX8 performance wise. My butt dyno told me that its just as slow as the RX8. Of course, we all know how accurate butt dynos are, but if I'm going to blow money on a car, it had better be special. 425HP is plenty special.

stock for stock the v6 will be quicker in a straight line, but not in the curves.

350/month isnt a huge payment at all, why would affording it be a secret?

31,500 dosen't add up to 35,000 after taxes.sounds about $1500 too high.

It includes a 5.9% financing APR, registration fees with the local BMV, and a $92 dealership fee.

Yes, the V6 will be quicker. But like I said, butt dynos are as accurate as butt dynos are. The acceleration just didn't feel special at all. EDIT: I'm looking for a car that'll justify me screaming "POOOOOWWEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" as I charge down the road at full throttle.

I minimize online talk about my personal finances.

I ordered mine 10/13/2008, without ever having sat in one. I got mine 6/3/2009, almost nine months later and 42 days after being built.

Saying that the wait was worth it does not do the car justice. The wait was long... really, really long... the wait completely disappeared the first time I cranked the ignition. It has exceeded every expectation I had... and I had a long time to build up my expectations.

The car is a rock star, no matter where I go... the whole drive is an experience in head turns, camera phones and thumb's up. Once I arrive, it's like being on the red carpet.

Unreal. Surreal. Awesome. Get a Camaro, you will not regret it.

I agree. It definitely sounds a bit on the high side of things.

MSRP on the one I ordered yesterday is $31,205

Taxes: ~$1,000
DMV: ~$390
Destination: $795

Which comes out to: $33,390

Obviously taxes and DMV fee are variable and the "Dealership Fee". Still seems to be a mysterious ~$1,500 lurking around!

Well, as I have said before. If you want it buy it. If you don't then stay away from it. Most people on here want the car and don't require anyone to talk them into buying it.
Questions you should ask YOURSELF........
1.Why do I want this car?
2. What do I want it for?
3. Am I more worried about what frriends and other people think about MY car?
4. Is a 426HP gass guzzler really what I want?
5. If i don't get this car how will I feel about missing out on a car I really think I like?

So with that said, make your own decision.

Well, if you want a fast car, the SS is it.

guys are running 12's with a few mods, and 11's with N2O.

Your RX8 doesnt get much attention anymore, does it? The SS will have people drooling at your car. Girls will ask for rides

V6 mods are surely to come out soon, if not already in the works. Also take into account gas prices and insurance, adding to your monthly costs. I'm getting a V6 due to another truck payment already in process. And I need it for winter. Now if I were in warmer climate, there wouldn't be an issue..

I looked at the Challenger and it was the best car for me, I didnt have to be convinced

If you love the car you dont need others to talk you into or out of buying.

DaAznKnight, here is how I would answer SicSix6 Questions.

For exactly the same reason I wanted one in 1968.

If you are going to worry about what other people think, then you are buying it for the wrong reasons.

If you cannot afford the gas, then you cannot afford the car.

Exactly the same way I felt when I missed out in 1968.

Now I wills say this, if you are going to buy this car from your head, you just might be on the wrong track. If you are going to buy a car from your head, then get a station wagon.

You have to buy this car from your heart.

So with that said, make your own decision.
1. It's complicated. A combination of a love for art, speed, beauty, and heritage.
2. Drive. Fast.
3. No. Couldn't give a damn. As you can imagine, I am one of the only rotary car owners at the local car clubs. To hold that status needs a thick skin. :p
4. The Camaro gets better gas mileage than what I get now. I get 11-13mpg city, and 19mpg highway (if I'm real lucky. Otherwise, I can get 16mpg highway). That's frickin Aston Martin DB9 territory, without the V12 power.
5. I'd be rather sad. The MSRP of the Camaro won't change for a while, but the RX-8 will continue to depreciate.

I know the final decision is mine. But what I'm looking for in this thread is really a rundown by owners on what they like or dislike about their cars. The salesman will always tell me how great the Camaro is, and play on my emotional love for this car. Owners who blew $30,000+ on their car won't take any problems too kindly.

The RX-8 gets plenty of attention at the race track. Especially when I blow away cars with two to three times the horsepower just by having the balls to take corners faster. :p

I don't know about girls asking for rides. I really don't buy performance vehicles to impress women.

I like keeping my fun with my car personal. I might chat with other people about it, but in terms of giving other people rides, or worse, letting them drive, I don't do that often.

Yeah, I understand the purchase of a performance car is really a matter that starts in the heart. That's how it is for the Camaro.

But let's face it. If the car turns out to be a pig riddled with problems, your love will quickly turn to suffering. When I get this car, it'll be a daily driver, grocery getter, and track toy. All at the same time. I've never paid much attention to GM's reliability when given such an enormous task, so I do need to consider these things.

But judging from the way the thread is going, I'm guessing the car's really bulletproof. That or no one has been willing to drive their cars yet. :p

You guys might see a new 1SS soon.
