ZL1 Vs What?? = ZL1

Guys,

Im really in love with the ZL1 but what really drives me crazy that all the videos on youtube shows the ZL1 loss in every drag race !!

Against the Challenger ST8, GT 5.0, GTO, shellby ... just loss after loss !!

It makes me really feel bad and raises many concerns in my mind about the ZL1 performance on track.

So I need a real experience from you guys. Is the ZL1 really a loser or its only youtube effect .

add G8's to the list, hahaha

They are not set up as drag cars like the mustangs. The ones ive seen run (low 12's @ 116-118) can hold their own at the strip, but it will stomp most in the ground on a road course!! Thats what its meant for IMO.

they arent a great setup drag off the showroom floor. If you are set on a camaro just go with a SS and make the mods needed.

if you want a drag car go with a C6 platform tbh.

That video shows the GT500 eke out a win...

Take those same cars to any track with turns vs the ZL1 and see who the winner is. The ZL1 does everything well and I like that about it.

Other than that run in the middle of July that list is totally believable and I can believe it without proof. I can see ZL1's doing high 11's bone stock with good DA conditions. Hell it better be able to do high 11's stock with the amount of power that GM is claiming in good DA. Even those times are only as good as stock LS3 C6 times despite having 150hp less. Thats kinda sad.

Especially since bone stock Camaro SSs have gone mid 12s (and bolt ons in the 11s). You would hope a ZL1 with 580 hp could dip down in the 11s.

Manual ZL1's can commonly be seen running high 12s - low 13s. The manual is obviously harder to drive than the auto (and the 1/4 mile fast list shows this).

The automatic ZL1 is more commonly seen running low to mid 12s (stock).

what do you expect lol with a driver in the car theyre close to 4200 lbs lol. the corvette has almost a 1000 lb difference. put some slicks on it a pulley and an intake and tune and im sure you could see low 11's/high 10s no problem

I am sorry but you would think 150hp and the excelent broad torque curve that the LSA offerers would be plenty enough to overcome a 900lb difference plus the Vette is not set up for 1/4 either. The mods excuse could be said for just about any car. That excuse reminds my of what Mustang owners were saying when they were getting destroyed by LS1's

obviously it is not lol. not sure why your saying you would think when the evidence is in front of us that it is not enough to over come the weight difference. are you implying there is an underlaying issue other than the weight making it so it doesnt run faster?

I have no idea why it doesnt run faster and I'm not the only one. Maybe the factory tune, heat soak? IDK

Not really man. But all those bad comments on youtube put you down completely :(.

ZL1 is on my list but I just keep on changing that list. Im mean you dont want to spend $59K on a loser after all especially when you get beaten by a cheaper car .

To me it is a balance of cash spent on a stock vs a modded car.

Heat soak is the most common issue I heard so far. I hope that ZL1 owners would give us more insights into it.

What do you want out of the car? Are you going to road course it? The ZL1 and 1LE are basically first road course cars. You have to turn them into drag cars.

You could buy an SS and make it faster in a straight line than a ZL1 for far less than 59K, but then you'll never have PTM, mag ride, etc. It's all in what you wanna do. The SS, 1LE, and ZL1 are all set up very differently. If you're worried what people will think of you on youtube...then that's a whole different set of issues.

You didnt get my point yet. The question is ZL1 really delivering what it supposed to deliver?

As you mentioned that you can spend less on other cars like SS, GT, SRT8 and feel comfortable for the value for money spent.

Modding is a totally different issue, but yes you will consider it as a good attraction when buying a car.

The car designs are late 60s retro, and in and around 1969 recall the Mustangs were strip favorites the majority of the time although the Camaro could hold its own. It was handling and speed around the twisties where the Camaro shined.

So in effect, things haven't changed all that much in comparison. (except the ride quality and all the safety and performance enhancements) While the Mustang has done a good job overall, I believe the ZL-1 is more of a complete car that does many more things well.

These are the salad days of pony cars people. It's "Jurassic Park"...the DNA was extracted and the dinosaurs recreated for us to enjoy. But bad things happen to send them back to extinction once they've been released. (aka EPA strangulation). Twin turbo V6's may be bad ass, but if I can't have a V8, I'm done.

Buy 'em before they're done, folks.

I don't understand why people are hating on the new gt500 for road course. Some pads and new brake fluid I bet make that just as good as the zl1. I don't like the look of the mustang as much as the camaro. If you want a race car then you need to look for something besides these 2 cars. They are muscle cars and pony cars not road race cars. The zl1 is only good on a road course compared to other big heavy muscle cars. The gt500 is a great strip car with its solid rear axle. I bet most zl1 owners will have crazy driveline lash if they drag the car often. Hell my 430whp ss has mad lash at low speeds. The thing is these cars are made so they balance cost and all the crazy gov standards. I think they are both great cars. If you want to run 1/4 miles go get a gt500 or buy a used ss for 25k and start modding.
