13 ZL1 - Intermittent pop while turning.

Guys -

13 ZL1 with stock suspension, wheels, and tires. I have noticed recently that while making a sharp turn, I will hear a pop come from the front. I also noticed it while backing out with the wheel turned. Thought I hit something but nothing was around me. Both the passenger and myself will hear and feel it when it happens. The noise is intermittent so I'm not able to duplicate. I took it to the dealer for it previously and they could not duplicate but said they didn't find any issues after inspection.

Any ideas what i should be looking for or where I can go to get a good is inspection?

I had a similar issue with my headers hitting the passenger side frame rail when the engine torqued and turning left. I'd check for clearance there if that sounds similar.

Mine does it when backing out of driveway and only turning wheel to the right. But once in a while only.

I always thought it was stiction in the suspension or just a sticky sway bar mount.

Had all sorts of these noises in the back of my Z4M coupe. Always the sway bar. Had them n my Subaru STi. Always diff bind. In the ZL1, I just pretend it's a Miata caught under the real wheel.

Same here when it is cooler outside. Back out of driveway, turn and pop. Warmer it does not. Most of the cars have this for some reason.

I feel better I'm not alone. Started noticing it as it got colder out here. It's only happened 3 times and only happens when turned to the right so far that I have noticed.

This sounds very close to what was happening in 2012 CTS v series. Excerpt from a post on that site:

Wheel Clicking

We acknowledge and regret that some CTS-V customers experience this "clicking sound" from their wheels in low speed, tight turn parking lot maneuvers. We've studied this phenomenon fairly extensively; it is the result of interface of the aluminum wheel to aluminum rotor hat configuration. We have released a technical service bulletin that prescribes a very high degree of cleanliness in the wheel-to-rotor mounting, and our experience to date is that the TSB, if followed exactly, is very effective in eliminating the noise.

Some customers had been concerned about this being a noise from brake system interference to the wheel under high steer angles. It is not. The noise emanates from the mounting surface of the wheel on the hat of the rotor at high steer angles. If you have this noise, the cleaning process and re-torquing is fully covered by your warranty at our dealership. If you choose to dismount wheels on your own, please follow the service bulletin pasted below and carefully follow the instructions on cleaning and torquing wheels.

GM has tested the integrity of wheel attachment on the CTS-V. The "clicking noise" is not indicative of any concerns or compromised performance in wheel attachment integrity, or in the wheel itself.

Mine does it only on cold days backing out of garage, I think it's the cold tire and cold pavement causing the tire to slightly slip. Never does it when the temp warms up.

So ... losing my mind???

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=387025

this "should" be the link .... I think .... then again I thought I posted this already so ..... maybe I'm losing my mind.
Anyway check this thread .... any of you hearing noise (especially in reverse) may have rear Diff issue. there is a TSB on this issue also not sure if it is within above thread or not.

I stopped mine from bothering me by backing into garage when car is hot .... thus .... leaving garage forward when cold ...... ahh no noise.

My diff has been serviced per this TSB, The sound I hear comes from the front only when car has been sitting and temps are cool to cold, as soon as I cut my front wheels it kinda pops and I can feel it slip. Cold hard tires are the culprit. It only does this on cold days and only when I first back out of my garage (unheated). I would bet guys with heated garages do not have this issue.

Yeah I had that issue to and they serviced mine per the TSB and it went away. It was done two weeks ago and that pop noise started prior to that. Also my rear diff is brand new. Replaced a few months ago.

Looks like the 1LE guys are having a similar issue.

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=390124

From the thread:
Quote:
Tire Pop Noise in Cold Temperatures

The 2012-2013 Camaro ZL1 and 2013 Camaro SS with RPO 1LE feature high performance tires that may exhibit a single audible "pop" or "snap" noise immediately after the vehicle is put into motion. This noise is typically noticed first thing in the morning after the vehicle has been stationary overnight or for an extended period of time and is more pronounced in lower ambient temperatures. The noise sounds similar to a brake pad that has temporarily stuck to a rotor due to vehicle inactivity. After the initial vehicle movement, the noise can no longer be duplicated until the car remains stationary again for an extended period of time.
This condition is a characteristic of the vehicle’s high performance tires. Due to the tires’ soft rubber compound, they have a natural tendency to stick to the pavement. When the vehicle is moved, this pop noise is the sound of the tire releasing from the pavement. Do not make any repairs. This is a normal characteristic of the high performance tires.

I misread the title at first, I thought it said intermittent POOP when turning... I was going to say don't take the turns so fast. Your scaring the crap out of yourself. I had to laugh at myself.

Carry on.

Me too. More when colder, like first thing in the morning. Done it since I had it. Diff fluid changed at 1500 mile and no effect.
