GM will keep Camaro affordable...

I found this on another 5th Gen. site:

GM product planners will heed calls to make the Camaro affordable and will offer a comparable lineup to Ford’s Mustang range by starting with a low cost entry-level V6 model. Execs at GM know the reason the Mustang is so successful is because it stayed true to its roots as a very affordable car to a very broad base of people, and now the General hopes to emulate this with its new Camaro.

Speaking with Automotive News, president of GM North America Troy Clarke told reporters that high-performance V8 models such as the Mustang Cobra and Shelby Mustang act as halo models and create a buzz that draws in customers to showrooms but at the end of the day it’s the more affordable V6 models that’s bringing in the profits.

The new Camaro coupe will eventually go on sale in February next year and followed by the convertible model roughly nine months later. Clarke revealed that both cars will get a base V6 engine, likely to be a 3.6L unit with about 281hp. Of course there will likely be limited edition V8 models as well.

“We know that the mission with the Camaro isn’t to create a specialty vehicle with a very narrow appeal that is very much subject to your wallet,” Clarke explained. “The concept of the car will evolve into a really fun-to-drive, stylish vehicle, as opposed to something that just breathes fire and has more cubic inches than the next guy.”

Maybe we'll get pretty close to 300 horse out of the V6

Personally, I hope GM sells a hundred and fifty thousand V6 Camaros. That makes the business case that much easier to justify so the few of us who want Z28 and SS models can still have them

Other than DI?

Displacement and tricks with variable cam timing. Nissan is getting 306hp out of its 3.5L VQ35HR in the Nismo edition 350Z, and that's without DI.

its easy to get 300 hp out of a v6.

hell the old 3.8's in the grand prix's were close to 300 without the supercharger and that was old technology by todays standards.

The other's answered the question, but I think it is DI, though...but tuned for economy, instead of power. (hence the 281hp versus 300).

..........I think.

I have to admit that a V6 making more power than my old LT1 is pretty cool.

affordable is a good thing, but I'm going into the Air Force, so that's not gonna be an issue for me, I'll put a down payment on a new V-8 Camaro, and have the government pay for it... lol but a 300 horse V-6 is a good idea to help kill the mustang's sales... the only thing that bothers me about a V-6 is that NONE of the original Camaro's had anything smaller than a 302.

Lots of original Camaros had 6-cylinder engines. From Wikipedia:
"The Camaro's standard drivetrain was a 230 (3.8L) straight-6 engine rated at 140hp (104kW) and backed by a Saginaw three-speed manual transmission"
My Camaro's 327 was originally rated at only 210 hp.

Wow first post and you'll calling someone out and proving them wrong...guts man. Haha JK and welcome.

Yup, the V6 model has always been the volume seller, even in the early ones. The original idea of the pony car was a small, affordable, decently sporty car. Kinda like the equivalent to today's sport compacts.

No doubt GM's V6 model will blow the competition's V6 models away.
