They're testing the Cadillac ELV version of the Volt power train and the V8 sound is an MP3.

The grille and front bumper (V6 bumper with mail slot) is the same front the Camaro IVER's had in 2007-2009. In case you don't know, IVER's were the Camaro test mules that were spotted back in '07-'09. Here are other details I noticed:
-"6" decal in front and rear windows
-bar code scanner decal on windshield (driver's side, bottom)
-Michigan manufacturer plates
-"SS" or "RS" emblem removed from stock location on trunk (poor job because glue still remains)
-NPP exhaust sticking through a poorly cut rear diffuser
-Ignition cut-off switches sticking through rear diffuser
-Slightly lower ride height compared to SS (1LE suspension maybe??)

All of this adds up to something interesting. If you take into consideration the LS7 VIN card story in December 2012 and the eyewitness claim of a V8 sound as the car drove by, I wouldn't be surprised if we're looking at a LS7 Camaro test mule.

this is what I can't wrap my head around with muscle car guys... our V6's now put out similar power to V8's in their hayday, yet people still claim it's "missing cylinders", but all they have to cling to anymore is "sound".

If a twin turb V6 puts down as much power as a V8, there shouldn't be any gripe. The only sound I'll need to hear to be happy is the sound of the receipt that prints out "Lane A: 13.00".

I hope you plan on being in "Lane B" with that kind of time.

I still say LS7 option on SS no Z28 model.

With all the time and money GM has spent to make a motor that gets better gas mileage (C7) I would think there is a better chance of seeing a bumped up
LT1 than an LS7.

At one time the Synergy Camaro was going to be a limited ed. car with a twin turbo V6 making 400hp and 30 mpg.

It's about the sound. A V6 today may make as much power as the old V8s but they sure as hell don't sound like them. Plus, today's V8s make significantly more power than the old V8s while getting better mileage.

I've followed this thread with some interest, and I've had a little time to ponder this possibility, so here's my take on this subject.

If indeed this mule is a project that Chevrolet is giving serious consideration into manufacturing, then I am perplexed at the logic of the development of a production LS7 5th gen. Camaro. My reasons are as follows:

1. The ZL1 has been introduced as the "ultimate" performance Camaro, and while it has done great things in terms of handling, it was overcast by its rival, the '13 GT500, with its greater power and acceleration numbers.
2. Its my opinion, but it seems that the name ZL1 probably would've been a closer fit for the LS7 concept, being that the 427 cubic inch engine and the ZL1 name were synonymous in 1969. The new concept of the current ZL1 being more of a handling and track car versus an all out street brawler seems to compromise the ZL1 legacy.
3. With the launch of an LS7 camaro (at the ls7's current tune of 505 hp), Chevy will have two Camaro models at a conservative power rating in the 500 hp band, and at a curb weight of over 4000 lbs, and both models may not approach the power and acceleration numbers of the current GT500.

A few years ago I would've been excited about the prospect of an LS7 Camaro; Today it seems that I am wondering why Chevy would introduce another overweight and underpowered 5th gen. instead of working on their current Camaro models to compete more closely with its Mustang counterparts. It would seem to me that the smarter bet would be to use Chevy's wonderful 3.91 gear set and more aggressive power tuning to bring the ZL1 closer to the GT500.

It would be great if the LS7 Camaro development would be a part of a greater plan to strengthen the ZL1 and the other Camaro models across the board.

I'm glad that's what you took out of it, instead of the fact that a stock V6 running 13's out of the box is acceptable...

Caring about just the sound alone is pretty ricer to me. If all you care about is sound and looks, just buy one of those speakers that masks your cars exhaust note like the ones they use on Pimp My Ride, or they can be like the BMW's and pump fake sounds into the cabin.

Oh christ...

The problem is that some people like their car to sound as aggressive as it is..

I'm sorry to break this to you but a V6 will never sound as aggressive as a V8. Nissan knows how to make a V6 sound good but the V6 Camaro, and most V6's for that matter, sounds like a blender...

I have no problem with a V6 Camaro but they don't sound as good as the V8 by quite a LARGE Margin...

Rice? Wanting an American muscle car to sound like an American muscle car is rice?

How about an NA V8 that puts out similar HP to a TT V6 being smaller, probably lighter, less complex and similar mpg.

It could be an LT1 under there for all we know. Testing for gen 6 purposes or for end of gen 5 switchout. But I do like to think its an LS7

Okay, but that doesn't change the fact that caring about nothing but sound is extremely silly.

Granted, but people in general are silly. They made a movie "The Dilema" in 2011 that this very concept was the underlying plot. It's gotta be a V8 for me though.

The LS7 is considered "old tech" now due to the introduction of the LT1 for the 2014 Corvette. The LT1 is the base Corvette engine and it almost produces the same power as the LS7. The Camaro has always been....and always will be....heavier and slower than the Corvette. I don't see a problem with adding a LS7 option to the 5th gen Camaro. Both the LS7 and 5th gen are approaching the end of their life cycle. This just makes the Camaro stay interesting as Ford introduces their new Mustang.
As for the Camaro and Mustang battle you mentioned, GM is actually responding well to the Mustang. Car & Driver, Motor Trend, and many auto news blogs have praised the performance of the 1LE over the Track Pack Mustang. The ZL1 has typically received better reviews than the GT500 too. Acceleration is not everything anymore.
