2010 Camaro vs 2009 Mazdaspeed 3

Hey, I was thinking about racing my friend, we are going to find a drag strip or some sort of abandoned airstrip nearby to us and I am curious as to what you all would think of the outcome.

I have a 2010 v6 Camaro RS with a muffler delete, a K&N Cold air and when I race him I will have an Iceolator for the LLT (atleast I think thats exactly what it is I cant remember atm)

he is completely stock no upgrades or tune or anything (stock comes with a stock turbo though).

What do you think, thanks.

Mazdaspeed3 will get you on top end, 100+ mph no questions asked.... if he can drive. To that point it may be close, or you may momentarily get ahead due to wheelspin on his part.

You are comparing a 240-245 whp 3200 lb 6-speed manual car to a 250-255 whp 3700 lb car with much longer gears for fuel economy.

Whatever you do, don't go to mazdaspeed forums and ask, they will eat you alive.

MS3's and Cobalt SS T/C's have K04 turbo's and respond great to mods. They can get 300-350 whp with just bolt ons and tune + maybe some corn. My friend's Cobalt SS has 335 whp with E85 tune and intake/exhaust, that's it. He ran 13.0 @ 112 mph on drag radials. From a roll he walks my friend's stock L99 Camaro SS.

Here's his 300 whp dyno run before E85, put down 359 lb-ft in the video. Now it puts down 398 lb-ft.

Frankly he can't drive very well, his shifting is almost a perpetual concussion, I drive an auto also.

Thanks for the info

I raced 1 at the track twice. He had a tune and intercooler changed.

This is what happens when it wheel hops off the line and misses a shift:

This is a clean launch:

i know cobalts can be made very fast and all but how does your buddies SS lose that bad from a roll?

His first run:

RT: -0.026
60': 2.635
330: 7.235
1/8: 10.474
MPH: 76.15
1000: 13.217
1/4: 15.508
MPH: 98.71

Second:
RT: 0.290
60': 2.433
330: 6.439
1/8: 9.613
MPH: 77.94
1000: 12.343
1/4: 14.637
MPH: 98.42

Still had problems launching the second time, he said it was hard not to wheel hop the car. He actually races his wife that runs a 2012 Camaro V6.

Sounds like he needs some better motor mounts!

I picked up a '13 Focus ST last Fall.. first FWD car with this kind of power and it had a LOT of wheel hop with the stock motor mounts... I've replace the rear mount and the passenger side mount and has done an amazing job of cutting down the wheel hop!!! Can't wait until Spring and run the ST again with the new mounts and tune! Are you listening, RTCAT600MAN? LOL!

I have a Mazda 3s with the 2.5L motor and if I turn DSC off and am on concrete the car will wheel hop pretty badly to the point I think I'm breaking something. Fun little car though, people don't expect it to be fast.

I beat one, their hard cars to launch. Had he hooked though, I would have been toast.

If you want to stand a chance of winning, id highly suggest racing at a drag strip. Since hes a mediocre driver, he might have problems launching and shifting which gives you the advantage. From a roll, he will take you on the top end

Definately race from a dead stop. Front wheel drive guys usually avoid drag racing and love to race from a roll.
As you mentioned, from a roll is where they usually gain an advantage due to their HP/weight ratio.

For most people, FWD is a bixch to launch agressively off the line without massive wheel spin.

From a roll and from a dig those cars are night and day. SGO is correct about why they like to race from a roll.

I would say wheel hop is more of an issue then wheelspin. If you get a good launch(and don't have reverse trans mount, torque damper, aftermarket engine mounts) you wheelhop, if you get anything else then it's wheelspin or bogging. Wheel hop occurs when you wheelspin too.

Definitely looking forward to Spring to see how my new motor mounts help with the wheelhop... I think i've managed to control most of it. Question will be whether I can get the car to hook! Might have to look at different tires...

Had to leave off of idle...

Idk if you guys know the ms3,has a limiter on 1st & 2nd gear.
Without a tune, it's not ultra fast.
With a tune, that deletes the limiter in 1st & 2nd gear look out he will walk you.
My boy has a ms3 with Cobb tune, he will run v8s & give them a real hard time till about 100. Ms3 top end is meh. From a 30 roll he walked an ss BAD.

Yea, but that is a tuned Ms3 against a stock SS (my assumption its a stock SS since your not stating other wise). Put a Tune on an SS and I think its a closer game.

How much is a Ms3 new?

All I know is when he 1st got it was quick , but if your ecu cuts power in 1st & 2nd gear how is that fair.

Ill bet even the v6 with a tune , it won't be as close as you think.

Power to weight is what's the ms3 is about 3200 lbs. with 280 lbs of tq stock.
