ELM 327 troouble

I just got the ELM 327 and the Torque app. I plugged in the ELM and the app said can't communicate with ECM. I started the engine thinking maybe it needed to be running. The engine started and immediately stalled. It started and kept running the second time but the app still says can't read ECM. I tried this all over again and the same thing happened. I know have a check engine light. Anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or did I get a defective ELM?

You did add it as a bluetooth device right? The pass code should be 1234

yeah I added it. 1234 didn't work. 6789 did but it doesn't seem to matter.

Try a different car. The one I have includes a small red light which comes on when it's connected to the car. Reboot your android device. Also go around the settings in torque app I think there is an option to display errors for faulty elm327 interfaces.
