Factory Stripes?

So I placed an order for a camaro and I ordered the rally stripe package along with it. Now Ive been going through these forums and am reading that the stripes are made of vinyl and applied like a decal? Is this true or am I totally confused here.

If it is true, I would probably want to get the stripes painted on by a third party. For anyone that has done that, what is a ballpark figure to add painted rally stripes? Thanks

Yes they are indeed vinyl and are applied like decals.

The majority of the quote's I've seen on this site is between $1,000-$1,500.

My Rally Yellow 2SSRS was built 3/26, stripes arrived 2 weeks later, car arrived 6/8 and the dealer misplaced my stripes, reordered, got them Monday, found the original set when the new ones arrived. Sinse Chevy installs very few decals/stripes, the sent my car to a ford dealer, they install a couple of sets a week on mustangs. They messed them up, spent 3 hours and never got the 1st one on. Now they're looking for another shop. I may have a custom set put on. If I do, my dealer will give me a new set and $100Not sure what I'll do.

Vinyl stripes are very common in the industry. If you go paint, depending on who you use and what you do, it will run from $1500 to $2500 for a good paint job. I had a quote for $800 but he wanted to come and do it in my driveway. LOL!!!

Don't get the decal stripes they are a waste of money. I did and they were factory installed with pin holes in them where they deflated blisters. Wasted that money and then had them painted on by a Custom painter for $1300 he did a great job as most I have seen on this site..

Well thats a bummer, since I havent seen one with factory stripes in person yet, are those people who did get the factory stripes happy with them? I'm kinda torn on what I should do here. 470 for the dealer installed option is pretty cheap, on the other hand im sure it would look much better painted for 1500+ and you wouldnt have to worry about it peeling off or arriving with any defects. Thoughts?

My dealers body shop is going to paint mine and will do 3 coats of clear over the top feathering the edges after each coat to get a nice smooth flat finish. Rear stripes rolled over the spoiler. $1000-$1200. They do nice work.

Can I ask how the body shop was able to stripe out the pattern before painting to insure they are the same layout/size etc of the factory decals? Did they clearcoat just the top surfaces after? I ordered the I/O with black stripes....now cant decide vinyl vs. paint and satin vs. gloss.........help!

Thanks

To me satin looks like vinyl while paint looks more like a show car. Vinyl is cheap compared to paint but vinyl has expansion/contraction issues over time with temperature extremes. Vinyl also has the issue of wax tending to get stuck in the edge and you can see the white residue; hard to clean it out too.

Paint is more expensive but done right it looks like it was done at the factory, and there's no problem with expand/contract or waxing/polishing. Look at some of the forum member pics who've had theirs painted and you can see how great it looks. I'd say go painted gloss.

What clear coat does GM use Camaro Stripes???

Hi Gang

First of all..Great forum...awesome info....and sounds like one big happy Camaro family on here.

I just took delivery yesterday of my 2010 I/O 2SS/RS.

The dealer said I can come back and have the black (DECAL) stripes installed this Thursday. I told him I am debating whether to go with painted or decal. I am leaning way more to the painted on as I want to extend them down over the front header panel as well.

Do any of you out there know what type/brand of clear coat GM uses on their factory paint? Has anyone experienced any problems after painting on their stripes and then clear coating over GM's stuff??

The painter at the shop I always use says he would probably go with PPG unless I get different info. I have seen guys on here that I believe work at GM.....any help on that?

Thanks!
G-
