Oil pump install question!!!

As some of you may have read on an earlier thread, my oil pump is kaput! I'm in the middle of changing the pump and I cant seem to reach the sump screen bolt. Do I have to drop the pan to reach it or does the screen spin around? Help please!!!

You mean the oil pick up tube? If so yes drop the oil pan by loosening all of its bolts and get about a 3/4" drop and it will give you enough room to get in under the oil pump and get to the oil pickup tube bolt. Hope that helps.

Be careful when reinstalling that the o ring doesnt get nicked or twisted or not seated right or you wont get oil pressure

Its a REAL pain in the ass trying to get that bolt started back up. My advice is get a bendable ratcheting 10mm wrench. I got mine at lowes. It took me an entire day to get that bolt back in. I used a tie wrap to hold the screw in the hole, and then just kept turning it till it finally caught. I wouldn't wish an oil pump install on my worst enemy!

While it's not totally necessary to drop the pan, it does help a lot to have a bit more room there! Dropping the oil pan isn't so bad anyway it only takes a few minutes.

The flexible gear wrench will help you a lot, once you get it loosened up, I like to put a zip tie around it so I have something to hang on to so I don't drop it.

Wonder how hard it would be to change the oil pump out if your crank is pinned? Getting the balancer to line back up where its drilled at would be hard seems like...

I would hope you are done by now, but i also laid out some clean shop towels under it that way if the bolt slipped it wouldnt fall in the pan!
