8 speed auto in Gen6 Camaro?

I just read on Corvette Forum that a SAE sheet was leaked with details about an 8 speed auto (8L90) in the 2015 MY. The transmission is similar is size as the current 6 speed auto.

Following is the original text of the paper:

General Motors shall introduce a new rear wheel drive eight speed automatic transmission, known as the 8L90, in the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette. The rated turbine torque capacity is 1000 Nm. This transmission replaces the venerable 6L80 six speed automatic transmission. The objectives behind creation of this transmission are improved fuel economy, performance, and NVH. Packaging in the existing vehicle architecture and high mileage dependability are the givens. The architecture is required to offer low cost for a rear drive eight speed transmission while meeting the givens and objectives. An eight speed powerflow, invented by General Motors, was selected. This powerflow yields a 7.0 overall ratio spread, enabling improved launch capability because of a deeper first gear ratio and better fuel economy due to lower top gear N/V capability, relative to the 6L80. The eight speed ratios are generated using four simple planetary gearsets, two brake clutches and three rotating clutches. The resultant on-axis transmission architecture utilizes a squashed torque converter, an off-axis pump and four close coupled gearsets. The three rotating clutches have been located forward of the gearsets to minimize the length of oil feeds which provides for enhanced shift response and simplicity of turbine shaft manufacturing.

The transmission architecture features a case with integral bell housing for enhanced powertrain stiffness. A unique pump drive design allows for off-axis packaging very low in the transmission. The pump is a binary vane type which effectively allows for two pumps in the packaging size of one. This design and packaging strategy not only enables low parasitic losses and optimum priming capability but also provides for ideal oil routing to the controls system, with the pump located in the valve body itself.

The transmission controller is externally mounted, enabling packaging and powertrain integration flexibilities. The controller makes use of three speed sensors which provide for enhanced shift response and accuracy. Utilization of aluminum and magnesium components throughout the transmission yields competitive mass. The dedicated compensator feed circuit, used in GM six speed designs, was supplanted by a lube-fed design in order to simplify oil routing and enhance shift response. Packaging is within that of the GM 6L80 design, allowing for ease of application integration.

The overall result is a robust, compact, and cost effective transmission which offers significant fuel economy and performance benefit, over its six speed counterpart, and shall provide an attractive balance of overall metrics in the automatic transmission market.

It wouldn't surprise me if they do put an 8 speed auto in. It would help with straight line performance and fuel mileage.

Traditionally, the Camaro SS gets it's drive train from the Corvette. The more units you can produce the less each unit costs you to make. It only makes sense.

I have to believe the 6th gen will get it. Imagine that along with the upcoming LT4 with 600 plus hp in a lighter Alpha chassis car. Maybe the new ZL1 or Z28? Should be bad ass either way.

An 8 speed is already available on the CTS.

CTS's 8-speed is Aisin sourced though, I believe.

This is an in-house designed/built transmission.

kinda old news. Im stuck searching new GM information weekly to stay ahead of the tuning curve, and you need friends in the right places lol

http://www.autoweek.com/article/2013...news/130409922

The problem I see with guys locally using the old school 4 speed transmission strategies and applying them to tune the 6 speeds. They are vehicle different transmission. As technology grows more with HP, your gas mileage gain will be in the transmission.

Your links mention a V8 8-speed "by the end of 2016" and the 2012 article talking about the MY14 Silverado having an 8 speed.... that didn't happen. I checked the Chevy website and all the NEW 2014 Silverados still have 6 speeds behind thier V6 and V8's.

I found this latest news more informative and perhaps a bit more accurate.

That wasn't the question. It was do you think the Camaro will get an 8 speed not will the Camaro get an in house 8 speed.

i hope they go back to doing more in house stuff than buying stuff from other companies... you have more controll over your production lines that way.. not to mention it reduces time
to get recall parts to dealers so they may fix production errors... i was looking at the chevy ss the other day and i kept asking myself how much of this stuff is gonna go in the new 6th gen camaro...

any ideas from anyone? can the 6.2 litre last or will GM go with less displacment and more efficentcy or possible force inductinon??? lot of questions and the time is ticking...

Expect to see the 8 speed auto and lt1 engine in the new camaro because of economy of scales.

I say nothing will be left on the table for the 6th Gen, if not when it debuts it will continue to have things added to its portfolio as did the 5th Gen and as now with the C7.

If I remember correctly there are joint (GM/Ford) 9 and 10-speeds in the works. The 9-speed is to be initially used in FWD applications like cars, CUV's, and crossovers, while the 10-speed is initially for RWD cars, SUV's, and trucks.

GM and Ford are combining monies and engineers to develop a 10 speed automatic transmission. Suppose to be out in 2015-2016 timeframe. It is rumor that each put in a billion dollars to do the development and testing. It will finally put the domestic auto makers equal to the EU automakers!

As long as they don't go to the continuously variable ones like Nissan.

Like every company rolls out products on time lol.
So my point is, If they are thinking about it, they are trying to make it work and will get rolled out.
