Performance Workshop

Hey guys, need your advise.

First of all I'll start of with introducing myself, my name is Brad and I own Enhanced Automotive (largest performance workshop in South Australia)

I need your advise, opinions and thoughts, my partner and I are looking at either 2 options, expanding here in Australia, in another state or packing up the entire workshop and moving to America, as a move interstate to me is no different to setting up in another country, so far suggestions I've been giving by fellow business owners here in Australia is either California or Las Vegas NV. From what I've read so far California seems to be the go.

What I do, Dyno tuning, engine building, chassis fabrication, general fabrication, cnc machining (obviously lots of billet products) and also specialise in motorcycles as I race super bikes here in Australia.

My question to you guys, is where do u think in California would best suit my business,

I do have 3 children aswell, all under the age of 11, so good areas would be great

Obviously here in South Australia our state is the bigger than california with only a million population. So we don't really suffer traffic jams and long travel times.

My suggestion is if your wanting to move into the Southern California area is to travel out in the area. Nothing beats introducing yourself to the locals that are in the business. I know the start-up costs in LA are higher than say Ventura County. In LA county the market is saturated with various speed shops so it will be a tough market. Their is plenty of industrial space and older maintenance shops that are here in Ventura area that can be rented or purchased. Simi Valley/Oxnard/Camarillo is within 30 to 40 miles north of LA county and can be served to suit needs in LA and across the country.

Also, south/east in the Riverside area and Temecula is where alot of motorcross professional guys call home.

That's the sort of information I'm after, thank you

When u say speed shops, do you refer to them as shops you buy parts from eg jegs or summit, or are they actual repair shops eg workshops.

Also can anyone list the areas to stay away from eg very high crime rate

Can anyone tell me about the freight system eg around california, for example if I ordered parts from Los angles, would they be delivered to eg San Diego in the same day, or next day delivery.

Well stated: I agree Ventura or Riverside areas are currently the best area's, to many shop's in LA County.

I'm not sure how well this helps but I know there is a lot of local guys that I meet up with during the week near moorpark California (ventura) area and to be honest there isn't one reputable shop out here that I can name. As other forum members have stated in this post. LA and continuing south down towards San Diego is saturated with shops & from a customers stand point I don't really care to drive 60 miles to drop my car off to have work done. You could potentially build a strong clientele base here in the ventura area (Thousand oaks, Westlake village, Moorpark, Simi valley & back over the hill into Camarillo). The customers out here are definitely not hard pressed for money and will pay for quality work. Hope this helps.

Anything in the West LA, Central LA, and some parts of East LA have some rough crime rates. Which means you may need to invest in security patrol, higher fencing with razor wire, to the typical video/alarm set-up. Typically for the most part logistics is truck to rail or typical frieght trucking. For everyday shipping FedEx, UPS, USPS, and DHL will statisfy the everyday stuff.

Ventura does have crime as well but not as saturated in population. Most shops have the typical fencing, alarm, and a mean yard dog that I seen around in Ventura county.

Speed Shops vary into CNC, Custom Builds, Machining Parts, and whatever the customer needs are. Most shops have a network if they can not do a particular job. The smaller shops usually sends out for paint due the extra overhead to keep a paint booth operational with state/federal regulations. Some send out their CNC work as well.

To be honest they are a few fab/custom/speed shops around. You can do a goggle search and that will help in your homework.

Plenty of shops, plenty of bad ones. Easy to make a name for yourself in LA county if you do it right.
