Thoughts On Differential Fluid Change When Cold

I want to change my differential fluid. *I bought the gear oil and friction modifier. *I am also in the middle of an exhaust install that is on hold while I wait for a part. *It is a Magnaflow exhaust and I noticed that once the installation is complete, the drain plug will be completely blocked. *I thought there would be no better time.

As I am getting ready, I read the bottle and it says you need to do it warm. *Of course that makes sense. It will help it drain better, right? *I don't plan to run the car until everything is installed. *The only way to warm it is to drive it. *Something else that warms up when driving will be blocking the plug and by the time the exhaust cools, the fluid will have cooled.

Sooo...

Did you change yours cold? *Cold has got to be better than not at all, right?

I went ahead and changed it. I hope I got enough of the friction modifier in. We will see tomorrow.

You will be fine. You just need to let it drain longer since the oil is thicker when cold and won't drain as fast..

Well, you should have added the modifier FIRST, then filled with fluid. That way you know you get it all in. Otherwise, youre fine.

I did add it first but I was using a 4 oz bottle trying to estimate 2.5oz. We shall see.

How many miles on the car when you decided to change it out? Are you doing the tranny too?

3500 miles. It was just a convenient time to do it because I had the exhaust off and based on many posts here as well as my desire to beat the crap out of my car I went for it.

Like others, it was thick, black, and lots of metal shavings on the plugs. I took it out tonight for the first time since doing it and my exhaust to do some figure 8's. No noise and it seem to run pretty well.

Which gear oil and modifier did you use, just curious.

Just curious, was it just black all the way through or did you notice a lighter color towards the latter part of the draining process?
