Angry Pulled over because of Hill Start Assist

This just happened. I'll try to be as succinct as possible while keeping it clear.

I was leaving the grocery store about 5:15 right in the middle of rush hour. The exit drive to pull onto the highway leading to my home is up a not insignificant hill. I was stopped for the truck in front of me (HSA was on) and when he went I pulled up and waited for it to be clear to pull out (I was turning left). HSA was on, but I'd let off the brakes as I'm accustomed to doing now so there was very little pressure holding me. When it was clear and I started to go, a car pulled out of the right turn out and suddenly looped back into the left turn out where I was trying to leave in front of me and I had to hit the brakes hard to stop.
As soon as he cleared, I was still OK to go, but didn't have the buffer I did before so I tried to go a little harder. Well, HSA was on again and since I'd stopped so hard when the idiot pulled in front of me, it held me firm. Without thinking I did as I'm now accustomed to in this car and gave it a lot more gas (rush hour highway traffic isn't the time to dawdle) and I started pulling off and was well over 3,000RPMs. Then HSA released and the rear tires broke loose and squealed (not too bad, but more than just a chirp).
Now I'm in my lane and headed home and I see blue and red lights behind me. I just knew he was coming because of me so I turned into the next road and waited and he came behind me and stopped.
It was a city cop who accused me of showing out as I was pulling out of the grocery store. I tried to explain about the Hill Start Assist, which he took to mean that I didn't know how to drive a stick and I must have rolled back and overcompensated. So he gave me the sage wisdom that I should use the handbrake to not roll back on hills like that and I wouldn't have to overpower it. (I didn't even argue since he obviously wasn't giving me a ticket).
Overall, no harm done, but still I had to deal with this and get lectured about how to drive from someone who probably has 15 less years experience in a manual trans vehicle than I do.
I'm mostly just venting but damn this "feature" should be defeatable or not exist at all. I'm dealing with it much better than I did before (not stalling anymore) but it sucks that I'm always worrying about it.

I keep hearing bad things about the Hill Assist. I'm glad the 12's didn't come with it.

No, not as of yet. Which is pretty sad. They should of made a way to disable it.

I have a 2012 and use the E brake anyway. I still don't understand exactly how the Hill Start works. From what I can gather from these threads is that there is a 2 second delay once you let off the brake and only after it is set. What triggers it the hill or the roll back and how do you release it. Surely there had to be more thought put in to the system.

Hey just think, at least you didn't get a ticket. Not saying you deserved to get pulled over, and you honestly shouldn't have been in the situation (if the HSA wasn't so annoying). But at least the cop was "nice" about it.

I swear I hear about the Hill start threads a lot and I guess in the Camaro its pretty bad to not let go when trying to move. I have a Fiat 500 abarth that has it and its super seamless its like the second I step on the gas the brake lets go, I also have a option to turn it off as well, I hope the engineers give future Camaro owners that option.

Same here but even more pronounced on the ZL1. Felt like the car wouldn't move and then suddenly it just lurched forward. Slight traction break for about 40'. Oops.

Keep your eyes out for a fix...I saw somewhere on the forums Chevy is aware of this business and is "re-programming" it for the '14s to be more friendly....Perhaps there will be a TSB or re-call at some point for the '13s....

Something for Adam @ Range to work on. His AFM Disabler for automatics is fantastic! I've heard enough stories about HSA to think they should be considered a safety hazard.

Wow, that's a lot worse than my quibble with hill start today, I embarrassed myself in front of all my work buddies by stalling my car when I was parking reverse on a decline, but at least a cop wasn't around to see

I honestly don't have a problem with hill assist. If you just release the brake, start giving normal amount of gas and release the clutch, the calipers will release and you start going. I have read that some people wait 3 seconds then start to release the clutch, but if you just try release clutch and give it gas you will get going. I was myself waiting the 3 seconds, but now have stopped and no I don't have any problems. Hope this helps.

I hope they do come up with a way to turn it off. I have to change where I drive due to this feature. There are a lot of stop signs on hills leading to busy roadways and when you have 10 to 15 cars in front of you every morning and it kicks on every single time. Man, it really starts getting on your nervs.

I don't have a problem with it either, it releases 2 seconds after you let off the brake. It is hilly here and there is always someone right on your butt, if you roll back at all it is going to be a problem.

It is a 2 second delay.... Every time. At least according to the owner's manual, and in my experience... The op did what you describe, and proceeded to do a short burnout. The system is flawed, period.

Something similar happened to me while I lived in Miami.
I was turning right at a stop sign and due to construction there was a large amount of loose gravel on the road.
When I hit the corner my tires broke loose and I was fishtailing my way into the supermarket.
Some dumba$$ off duty cop decided to give me a ticket for reckless driving.
Hired a $99 lawyer which got the case thrown out of court.
Glad you got away with only a warning.
