2012 Camaro ZL1 Kook's Headers, Green Cats, and Roto-Fab NO TUNE

All,

My father and I decided to get some basic bolt ons to give the Z some more noise. Getting more HP was not the main goal. We did do a stock dyno to see what these mods with yield. The Kooks were not an easy install on the ZL1 like the youtube videos showed. The passenger side was the easiest. We thought the driver's side would be easier with the amount of room there was to work. The install took about 9 hours with a lift. The driverside would not bold on like it should because the front pipe was hitting the motor mount and would not sit flush on the head. We did have to crush the back side of the front pipe to make it work. Maybe the SS is different then the ZL1.

As stated above we did not do a tune because we did not want to void the warranty. We did a baseline dyno that showed 514hp and 499tq at the wheels. That would translate to 595 at the crank by my calculation. I made some videos of start up and a light take off with this setup. Currently we are going to dyno in another few weeks. We do not race the car and in a years time we have 2400 miles. We are happy with the results the car sound mean and we left the factory exhaust. All comments and opinions are welcomed.

I will add more videos when I get a chance to take more

Thanks for the video. I just ordered the same set up. Can you get an idle clip walking around the car starting from front going to the back? Throw in some revs as well.

That sucks to hear. I've done countless header installs on 4th gens and they suck; so I was looking forward to a 5th gen. Don't really dimple or dent a $$$ set up like this.

Thank God I had a press at work. We used that and pushed on it until we had enough clearance.

Once I get the car back I will get those videos posted.

I was considering this but was concerned about running lean without a tune. I will be very interested in seeing the dyno results. I assume you will be checking AF ratio?

I always love hearing the sound of a ZL1. Neighbors must love you now that its even louder. I'm stock and my neighbor tells me it rattles her windows and her house is easily 200 feet away! Heard that scraping noise pulling out of the driveway, I just ordered a set of splitter washers.

I didn't have any problem with hitting a motor mount while installing my Kooks LTs. Bending my wrist in order to reach all the bolts was my only issue... There was one spot that I just couldn't get the new bolt started in. After about a half hour of scratching my head on how to get it in there I tried a factory bolt (has a slightly tapered tip) threads caught right away on my first try. Thought I'd mention that as a helpful hint to the next guy installing headers.

Sounds sweet! I haven't seen a set of green cats installed on a ZL1 yet. everything working like it should? No CEL?

Best regards,

I thought installing the Kooks was a snap. Slipped right in easier than any header install I've ever done.

BTW you will get a SES light for a "delayed O2 response". Even with the green cats.

I reused the stock bolts because they are a better metal than the ones provided. We were as careful as possible so we didn't strip the head.

Good to hear! I figured as much, but I have been wanting to see a few real world cases before safely assuming. I'm looking forward to your dyno numbers as well! Keep up posted!

Are you running the Green cats? Interesting considering the extra cost and promise of no CEL.

He may not get the catalyst efficiency codes with the rear O2's, but the delayed response codes are related to the front O2's. They are P015B and P015D. And they'll show up in a couple days.

Sounded awesome on the take off video. Sucks you had so much trouble with the install. I have read,in another thred, that the older style Kooks don't bolt right up to the ZL1. They have since changed something so the headers fit the SS and ZL1. I have the Kooks off my SS, so I will be most likely making the same dents/mods you did. As I don't want to buy new headers when these only have like 2000 miles on them.

I'm not use to it. I had to be careful as those tires are no goo at those speeds.

Not much louder than stock at cruise. Only noticeably at WOT.

Only CEL light for misfires because the ignition wires randomly keep coming disconnected by themselves. I have checked them all and they are all on but randomly they come off. It's like the motor twist and then the wire fall off the spark plug end only.
