HELP..To Chip or Not to Chip?

I have a Camaro SS 45th V8 with a K&N Cold Air intake with a Borla S-Type Cat back Exhaust. And my question is if it is worth the money and Mod to Chip my camaro to get better engine performance (i.e. Shift points and Gas Mileage, horse power If so how much?) Please chime in Camaro Family.

First, we camaro folks tune. Not chip

Second, it is absolutely worth tuning, but only if you spend the money on a GOOD, REPUTABLE dyno tune. Doing a tune now is premature, but add headers and you will most certainly need it.

"chips" aren't really a popular choice with these cars.

Most 5th gen owners who want to up the attributes that you've mentioned go with either a dyno tune or a remote tune from a reputable tuner.

From what I've read, gains with just an intake and cat back exhaust are fairly minimal and not necessarily worth the cost. Most of us who have tuned added long tube headers at the same time. That's a very noticeable gain when combined with an upgraded intake and a tune. Actual numbers will vary, but 30-50 RWHP is reasonable with LT headers/Intake/Tune.

One thing to make note of is that an L99, (auto tranny) with your mods, will get much more benefit from a tune than an LS3 (manual tranny). The reason for this is that your tuner can adjust your shift points and make the car much more responsive. The HP gains will still be minimal, but you would be applying your HP more efficiently.

As for cost, again it varies. Dyno/Street tunes range from 250 and up. I was quoted 450 for a dyno tune in upstate NY. A remote tune, which usually includes a handheld tuner will run about 4-500.

If you go to the tuning and diagnostics section of the forum you'll find a ton of great information.

I don't know about a tune but the Bowtie on your steering wheel is ugly lol, I can send you a carbon fiber overlay for free if you want, and p.s. get headers first then get a Dino tune.

Welcome Wink9110,

Here's a link to the Atlanta Club Lounge CamaroKid mentioned. We've been hangin there for a few years now. If you forward to the last page, you will be current. I invite you to ask your question there, introduce yourself, and hang out with us at our events. We're more of a good group of enthusiests that hang out and do events together, than a club. Good times.

My suggestion would be to do headers THEN maybe look for a dyno tuner around you. If you can't find one with enough info, an "email" tune is OK. They will ask you to data log you car and you will have to email them the data.
