2010 ss vs 98 z28

A freind of mine wants to go to the track and race. I have a 2010 SS with CAI intake and Muffler Delete.

He has a 98 z28 with 3 inch true duals, long tubes, 3:73s, and a tune
His is an auto mine is a manual

who wins?

IMO If you can drive it may be a drivers race ... if not I'd give the edge to him.

I had a 2002 SS A4 with longtubes, lid, and a tune. In the dead of summer in central texas heat I drove 30 minutes to the local race track on bald sumitomo tires, never turned off my car, went straight to the staging lane, and ripped a 13.0 @ 108. My car was plenty heat soaked and spinning like crazy. IF his runs anything like my old LS1 did it should be a good run.

And I don't really car how they make the horsepower, whether it a Turbo, supercharged or just a whole lot of hamsters.

To be honest, because he has an auto, he has the advantage. My 99z28 auto ran 13.3s (bone stock) all day long. With intake, headers, it was a high 12s car.

But if you're an excellent driver, you could take the win. You need to keep the race close off the line, and then you stand a good chance.

I'll take odds on your 2010, New cars run better than old cars. He's a good bit lighter but you got more power. Would be close for sure though.

Its a drivers race, both are high 12 cars. Going to come down to the launch and reaction time, your topend will be stronger and he will have the edge in the first half with the auto.

What tires is he on? My 01 Z28 A4 3450lb car ran consistent 12.8's in sh!ty Oklahoma DA. Car was almost identical in mods to your friends at that stage of my mods. Only exception being I was using a 3 1/2 inch cut out for racing and my 01 had a factory LS6 intake vs his will be a LS1. The thing was it HAD to have a DR tire with the 3.73's otherwise it was spin city. With out the DR's I would be lucky to hit mid 13's at that stage of mods. That car ended up going 12.2 after I put a torque converter in it. If he is using DR's and the engine, trans is still in prime shape I think he has the advantage. If he is on street tires and you bring your A game you should have the advantage.

doesn't bother any of you that a 12 yr older camaro is capable of beating your new Camaro??? I love my car and find its got good power etc...but when I read a thread like this...I wonder what happened to progression!

That 12 yr older car has significantly greater mods done to it.

Both cars are very close in performance (stock vs. stock). The edge definately goes to the 5th gen.

But progression is more than just speed. I loved my 4th gens (owned 2 of them), but the 5th gen is a much much better car (no comparison when you look at the total package).

Thanks guys! Well i'm not going to lie i'm an average driver, ive been out of the game for 7 years, I hav'nt had time to go to the track and work on lauching this car. What works best? no traction control, etc, etc.

He is on street tires and 21 inch wheels.

We will see in june! Maybe by then i'll have a few more mods

No not really. I guess just because Ive owned an LS1 or 3 and know what a performer they can be, coupled with its lighter weight and SRA. Last 4th gen f body I owned was in 2011 and it was still a hard pulling sucker. Now that I've got 3.91's I feel like I've evened the playing feel with my old bolt on ls1s ... Almost.

TC off, rev to about 1800-2200rpm, feather clutch out and mash that gas pedal to the headlight until the end of the 1/4. Oh yeah you'll do some shifting too lol. It's what has worked for me

A 4th gen with 21" wheels?
If so, the race should be all yours. There's no way he's going to run a fast time with 21" wheels and street tires.

21" wheels on a 4th gen is like 24" wheels on a 5th gen.

At that RPM I would fall asleep at the wheel with a huge bog! More like 3-4000 and feather it out, if your track is not prepped well then dial it back to 3000 rpms. My brother still has his 2000 TA with a lid, full exhaust, mail order tune, Auto trans.. when all I had was headers on my car I pulled his pretty hard. I also came from 2 4th gens myself, they dont have the topend like a ls3 camaro. But the 5th gens are much harder to launch!
