Question Window Tint?! HELP!

Okay, I own a 2010 Camaro 1LT RS. I would like to get the windows tinted. I don't really want to go anything less that 30% becuase it is suppose to be 50% legally. But anyway, I looked at the window of my Camaro and it says 70% Transparency STOCK. Does that mean it's already tinted at 70%?

Also, if the Windows are already tinted at 70% what percent should I put on to equal 30%-35%.

If anyone owns a Red Camaro could you please post pictures of your tint with the % Number? Thanks!

P.S. I am still a noob to Camaro5.com so forgive me if this is posted in the wrong spot.

If you put on 35% tint, it'll be around 32% if a cop does test it. The windows are tinted roughly 70% from the factory. Talk to your tint guy/gal an they should explain this in more detail, if they can't, go somewhere else.

The answer to your question is NO.

The factory glass allows 70% of the light to enter.........................it does not block 70% of the light from entering....it actually blocks out 30%.

The misnomer is that you believe transparency means the same thing as tint..............................it is actually the opposite in that context. Simply put...................if the glass were 100 % clear and you put 35% tint on it. The tint would be allowing 35% of the light into the car or the opposite................... keeping 65% of the light out.

The passenger and drivers side windows in ND can be tinted to block out 50% of the light maximum, this is also allowing 50% transparency..........aka 50% of the light in.......so using 35% is automatically illegal.

The little windows behind the doors from which rear seat passengers view out, may be tinted as dark as you'd like................meaning 100%.

The rear window may be tinted as dark as you'd like...............meaning 100%.

No mirror or metallic reflective tints are allowed anywhere on the car in ND.

The windshield may not be tinted below the factory supplied tint threshold of 70%. Do not add any tint to the windshield.

Once again if you install 35% tint on clear glass, the tint will block out 65 % of the light.

If you install 35% tint on glass with a 70% Transparency and 30% of the light is already being blocked.......................(35%+30%) divided by 2 = 32.5% Transparency.....MEANING............you'd be far under 50% on the drivers & passenger windows and thus in violation ..................because the legal threshold is 50% as mentioned above.

I just learned this the other day. The lower the number when it comes to tint the darker it is. Below is a link for each states laws. In MN the law states the windshield nothing can be added. The side and rear windows have to be less than 50% tint meaning it has to be more than 50% transparent with a +/- of 3%. There is also a limit to the amount of reflectivity. With the windows already being 70% transparent that only leaves us with less than 20% left. I did a search for tint products and would prefer pre-cut and 3M but the lightest I could find is 70% tint and that to me would exceed the MN laws for tint.

Also to answer your question, technically the answer is yes. By tint reference the stock windshield is 70% tint from the tint ratings I have found.

Check this guys build thread out, his car is orange but would give you an idea of the tint on a color that is close. His windshield and Fr. side windows would not be legal in ND.

I have 15% on the sides and 5% on the back.. Anything on the back in NYS is legal and whenever I pass a cop I just roll down the windows!

First of all, 50% tint is VERY light. For you to attain a 50% level of tint (taking into account the factory 70%), you would have to go with a 70-80% film. For your windows to meter out at 35%, you would need to put on a 50% film. You can calculate this (roughly) by turning the percentages into decimals and multiplying them by each other. For example, 0.5 x 0.7 = 0.35... or 35%

If I were you, I would just put on a 35% film and not worry about it. 35% film will typically meter out anywhere between 27-32% depending on the manufacturer, color, material, etc.

Good luck! Tint is one of the cheapest mods, and makes ANY car look better.

It seems the OP wishes to keep his cars tint...................legal, and thus 35% would be really illegal and something he'd worry about.

Don't do it yourself. It looks like hell if you don't get it right and/or use the best materials. This is one of the few mods I won't try at home.

A friend of mine has tinted windows professionally for 20+ years and he's really good at it. He tinted the heck out of his side windows and got pulled over/ticketed, so he devised a way to skirt the law. Since meters (at least at that time) to measure the tint % hang over the edge of the window and shine a light through the glass to a sensor on the other side of the glass, they can't measure the tint % in the middle of the window. He simply used lighter tint around the (measureable) edge of the glass and used really dark stuff everywhere else. It violates the intent of the law and likely will get him hassled in the future, but he's an a$$ to begin with and he enjoys giving officials the proverbial finger anyway. I don't suggest trying this.

Look at it from an officer's point of view. I wouldn't want to have to approach a vehicle pulled over with black-out windows at night, and that's partly why these regulations exist, particularly on the driver's and passenger's windows. Just roll them down if you get stopped and keep those hands where the officer can see them! Stay safe.

I have 20% on my windows in PA (where no tint is legal) and I'm yet to run into an issue with LE. Tinting is typically a secondary offense, so you need be doing something else wrong before they can ding you on tint.

Also, don't do it yourself unless you know exactly what you're doing. Nothing looks grosser than a back window tint where its nothing but bubbles.

If you are asking about the tint on the factory windows check at the bottom of the glass, there is writing on it stating the amount of transparency and the amount of tint. I think most cars from GM come standard with 70% transparency and 30% tint. This is pretty much for the purpose of blocking out the UV rays.

Here in Minnesota they don't have to pull you over for another offense when it comes to tint. I have seen tickets issued for tint in the Court reports section of the local papers. It also used to be that law enforcement couldn't pull you over for the seat belt law when that began. They had to pull you over for another moving violation first. Of course it turned out to be more revenue for the state so that was lifted and you can now be pulled over for just seat belts. I think the tint violation runs around $120. The seat belt now is $140 I think and yet we drive on crappy tar here in the NW part of the state.

Ended up going with 50% on the sides. 5% on the 1/4 windows and 5% on the back.

I will hopefully get the windshield tinted soon. I will try to post a picture here in a few days if I remember

Yeah that won't work anymore. Two piece tint meters have existed for quite awhile.
The biggest headache is if you have a safety inspection up here. The stations have meters now. Usually the warm day windows down works to get past that, but not always.
I have 20 Percent on 3 of 4 cars. I have 5 percent on a fourth. It is great during the day but too dark at night IMO. 20% tends to match up with factory fairly well on trucks and SUVs and is plenty dark enough for the most part.

YellowRS, if you haven't applied any tint yet, you might want to look into Huper Optik tint. In AZ, I don't give a rat's ass what it looks like, I need heat rejection, and this stuff delivers. My side windows are done with it and another brand of nearly clear film was applied to the windshield (you can't tell it's there, but it is, as I watched them apply it). Standard "limo" tint was applied to the back, as my installer didn't have a wide enough roll to use Huper on the back.

You can shine a heat lamp onto the outside of my windows and you don't feel it at all inside. Try that with any other tint, even the darkest available, and you most definitely DO feel it. Only drawback is cost, because it is definitely spendy. I got the tip from Ruby Camaro, and she was right. Good stuff.

Is your math right? My understanding is if you have stock 70% tint and add, let's say, 35%, then you'd measure 24.5%, not 32.5%. Right?
