55k miles and I think my engine just crapped out

Driving home from work just now I am trying to accelerate from an on ramp on to the parkway, suddenly I get service stabilitrak, and the check engine light starts flashing. The car immediately starts running like crap, is down on power and has a very loud tick from the engine. At idle when stopped it barely runs its fighting to keep running, popping shaking and rumbling theres a strange smell coming from the exhaust, its not smoking and it doesn't smell like fuel either I can't even explain the smell but have never smelled it before and I've been around cars for a while. All the gauges look fine, cooling, oil temp, pressure etc.

This car has absolutely 0 mods, dead stock, one of the first Camaro SS's built, religious oil changes every 6k or so miles (when the dash tells me basically).

Anyone? Did I just lunch the motor?

I wouldn't run it. Get it towed to the dealer and wait for the verdict. It sounds like motor damage.

Thanks,

Was just wondering if anyone had the same "issue". I'm very happy with how Onstar/ Chevrolet roadside responded, they were very quick and they towed it to my trusted dealer. I am sure they will take care of me, but I will let you know if I need any help.

I was thinking that or coil packs as well. But cats usually is gradual, this was like something just let go.

Yes let the dealer look at it and I am sure it will be covered under the 100K powertrain warranty.

If it really is 100% stock, you're still under warranty...bring it to the dealer and ask them to fix it.

Yes it is covered under warranty

The verdict is: collapsed lifter spring. They have the parts ordered and are taking care of it this week.

Has anyone else had their valvesprings collapse? Yeah I know its only 1 but with only 7 months left on my powertrain warranty you can probably understand my concern.

He didn't say valve spring, he said lifter spring.

It's not common with the LS3 engines...but it's not unheard of to lose a lifter spring.

Yes you are right, not valve spring. Not sure why I said that.

If you had a 1997 or earlier Camaro, you could take the intake off and replace a lifter...1998 and newer you have to pull the cylinder heads...PITA.

What are lifter springs?

I know that the L99 lifters have springs for DOD...

but you have an LS3 (M6)....

You are correct. They are valve springs, and always have been. They are connected to the valves and they control the valves. We even called them "valve springs" back in the 60's. Comp Cams calls them valve springs. I think they still do the same thing, control the valves.

This same exact thing happened to my LS3 a few months ago - 65K miles. Broken valve spring. They replaced the spring, seal and rocker arm and it has run fine since. I'm thinking of replacing all my valve springs. Luckily it didn't drop the valve this time. I don't feel safe with these valve springs.

Yes, everyone calls these valve springs. I have never heard anyone call it a lifter spring.

Yes, this happens a lot. All springs are metal and are suspect to imperfections. Hopefully QC testing weeds them out... but there are still some that slip through the cracks. I wouldn't change springs as a precaution... because you might be changing out good ones for faulty ones.

these things happen even if you maintain your car. If your going to be nervous about whats next id suggest the bus because it never ends. These cars are built very well enjoy it don't worry about something that you have no control over.

Still waiting to get the receipt in the mail from the dealer.

Yes the LS3 has hydraulic lifters, and the dealer called them "lifter springs" which confused the shit out of me because I know for sure the only springs in there are valve springs. I've also never heard of a valve spring collapsing, breaking yes but not collapsing. Lifters however do collapse and I've heard of that.

So I am interested to see which one (or both) actually broke and once the receipt shows up I will let you know.

Ok so got the official receipt back, code P0300 #7 valve spring separated.

They replaced the valve spring, the lifter, valve, and the pushrod. To do this they removed the cylinder head from the car so they replaced the head gasket and all the other gaskets on that side!

Glad this happened under warranty!

If this wasn't under warranty, any idea what the cost would have been?
