Question Knocking Noise in the Rear - 2013 2LT Auto

Hey Guys...

This only happens once in a while, so I haven't discussed it with the dealer yet. Not being able to duplicate the noise on command will certainly make this an up hill battle, unless I get my ducks in a row.

On colder days, when I'm puttering around town... At lower speeds on neighborhood streets, or in a parking lot... There is sometimes a knocking sound from the rear.

It goes: Knock....... Knock...... Knock.Knock.Knock.Knock.Knock.Knock.Knock.

It's always the 2-3 inital knocks, followed by a series of 6-10 quick repetitive knocks.

Has anyone had this problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Senator

Sounds like the clutch packs by your description. Call the dealer and explain the issue. See what they say.

Does this always happen within a few minutes of starting?

There is a brake self-calibration sequence that sound like what you are describing. It happens only once in a while.

It only happens once in a while. So is the calibration thing normal?

Senator Atkins,

I’m sorry you are experiencing this issue. I have researched my resources; however, there are currently no known “knocking” issues available at this time. I second the advice of “Hannibal”, have your dealer take a quick look.

Please keep us posted.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

If I remember correctly, someone here described it as the gas tank vacuum self check. You won't hear it with a full tank though, only at some point when you have less than a full tank.

I just call it the tapping of my kidnap victims in the trunk

It's the EVAP system doing diagnostics

These cars do not have a baffle in the fuel tank. At low speeds when you have half tank or less, the gas will smash around in the tank and create a very pronounced knocking sound inside the car. It certainly has a liquid sound if you listen beyond the initial "knock" sound. The best way to eliminate the far worse clutch pack issue suggested, is to stop the car (with half tank or less) and see if you hear the knocking sound immediately. If you do, it's extremely likely to be just the fuel slamming the tank, which is normal.

Hey man I had the same issue as u can see in my post. I took it to the dealer yesterday and here is what was wrong with mine. From what the dealer said it was the 4th 2013 come in with the same issue. 2 manuals and 2 autos. The fix was the same for all of them. It appears that the studs are prematurely failing causing the threads to wear n the lug nuts backing themselves off. When they put it on the lift the driver rear tire fell off.(thank god it didn't happen n the highway) one of the studs broke completely off. Keep in mind I had the car for a month now and have never taken the tire out, swapped them etc. It was a Safety issue so they were quick to replace the studs, lug nuts and locks on all four wheels. I am going in on Monday to get a new rim since it damaged the inserts. All under warranty. I'm not saying this is what is going on with your camaro or saying that there is a recall TSB etc, just sharing what happened with mine. I would suggest checking t out and if you see something wrong take it in. good luck. See Below for broken stud. hope this helps.
