First Pre-Production Chevy Volt Hits The Road

Quote:
Chevy’s Volt, has there ever been a car with more riding on it? Probably not, and at Autopia, we’ve been on top of Volt developments like white on rice. The latest news from GM’s Prius beater is that the Pre-production car has just hit the streets.

I wonder if GM was trying to design it like the prius if that's the way all these things are going to look for aerodynamic reasons? The side profile looks extremely prius-y :(

The Insight isn't far off either.

The Volt's design is actually more aerodynamic than the prius. Should have a lower drag coefficient.

This is good news. I hope GM tests the crap out of this car because if they have any problems/recalls after production starts it could be devastating.

Yea. Think "panic d' jour" but instead of just us and maybe a couple blogs going ape shit it will be the entire media. There will be congressional investigations into issues like brake weights lol.

I hope GM takes some serious lessons learned from the Camaro launch into the Volt launch. I wonder if they're even going to do orders at all. I mean they might just do like they did with the one-per-dealer v6s and ship standard builds out to dealers. The Volt is a very different car for a very different market won't have nearly the options like the Camaro; one drive train, no stripes etc. Pretty much just trim level and color. And the first model year is going to be a very low volume production so they could probably get away with just saying "sorry, no custom orders".

A very nice car imo. The side profile is nice, but the rear end looks a little high (not that i'm worried about it)
Would be a very nice commuter car in the city! Not so much in the country out here...

Wait a minute. I thought black was bad for the environment? Lol..

Aren't they supposed to market this to the eco crowd?

So GM uses silver on every car but now someone genius decides to roll it out black?

Relax, it's a tester, not a show car.

Cool!

I actually think that's a really hot lookin' car! Far more aggressive looking than the Prius...though that car doesn't set a particularly high benchmark ... and even though aerodynamics has constrained the design somewhat...It looks good! Can't wait to see the final, production model.

Someone mentioned how GM might do ordering/etc for this car...I think last I heard the first model year was going to be some 10,000 or so cars...so they can focus...and get it "righter than right". The next model year will be more, and then more in the next, etc, etc, etc. Also...as the model years progress...the car should get a little cheaper, too.

EDIT -- and I won't hesitate to say that for my daily-driver I'll need to replace the cobalt in a half a decade or so.....this thing is WAY high up on the list.

No thanks.

One of my all time favorite quotes from a different car forum I frequent, "I downshift next to hybrids so they can hear me killing the environment."

And I always do.

Always.

I do hope the car does well.

6th Gen Camaro will probably have a powertrain like Volt just faster like Tesla sports coupe.

^Keep politics out of the forums.

I think the Volt looks a whole lot meaner then the Prius. The Insight is crap, the Prius is a tleast moderatly big inside.

That design to me is just as ugly as the Prius.. I would never buy one of these in a million years unless they can make it look like a sports car and have the performance of a sports car...I would buy a Camaro for example with the Volts engine in it if it gave me the same torque and speed as the current LS3 and got 40mpg or above.. But I sure would miss the rumble..

And yes the side looks like a Prius and Insight. however the front staring straight on looks nicer.. But I still would not get into that death-trap..
Prius

Volt

The Tesla is a beast though, so I wouldn't mind that at all. That little SOB moves. It's so heavy that it won't make a turn at turn at high speeds worth crap, but that's beside the point.
