Ever Heard of '69 Camaro COPO 9567?

Here's quite a story of "What could have been" and "Let me make one of those"...

From this week's Hagerty Newsletter comes the story of what Vince Piggins "almost" pulled off, and what one man did to secure his own version of a concept car virtually lost in the mists of time.

http://www.hagerty.com/classic-car-a...s%2007-17-2013

Enjoy!

The only real 'exotic' aspect of an original '69 COPO to recreate is the aluminum block anyway...and even then it was for weight savings. Racers found the engine difficult to live with and many went back to iron blocks

Here is another excellent source of info on the COPO's.
I picked mine up at a charity auction two weeks ago, autographed by the entire COPO build team.

For authoritative info on the original '69 COPO Camaros, take some time and go through this site:

http://www.camaros.org/copo.shtml

This covers both the 9560 - ZL1 all-aluminum cars as well as the 9561 - L72 iron-block cars. Mention of the 9737 Sports Car Conversion package is included, which was available on both, and essentially added Z/28 components/wheels/tires for those wanting a better all-around car than simply a strip-teaser...

As for the ultra-expensive COPO 9560 cars, many had their engines replaced by other less-expensive powerplants, simply to get 'em off dealers' lots. Some languished into the early-'70s before finding their 1st retail homes.

Today, of course, a genuine COPO 9561, numbers-matching (and really-really rare in that form), are considered Top Tier collectables!

Great read! And it makes me wonder how we'll look back at the performance cars of this generation. How legendary will the 5th gen Z/28's and ZL1's be 30-40 years from now??
