A6 and M6 in the ZL1, are they different than the SS?

I've been searching here and on the web for specs, can't find any. Are the transmissions in the ZL1 beefed up at all over the SS ones. If so, how?

I personally don't know what the differences are but I found this.... I make no guarantee this info is correct.

"The 6L90 transmission is slightly longer and taller than a comparable configuration 6L80 due to it's beefier internals. GM states, ". It is a heavy-duty version of the 6L80 six-speed automatic, with a strengthened input gearset which has two additional pinion gears for six total, and a strengthened output gearset, that uses wider gears than the 6L80. The 6L90 flexibilty extends to the clutches where the 6L90 has one more clutch plate than the 6L80 in each clutch for heavy duty applications."

How strong is the A6 and driveline in the ZL1. Does anything really need to be upgraded if you start getting into the 700+ RWHP range?

thats it for torque? so pretty much with any power adders on the manual you will require a clutch? i thought the car camewith 560 torque?

that's not the clutch that the tremec's torque rating. Tremec does not make the clutch.

both these transsmissions are reated at ~550lbs torque for a passenger car. they both seem to have good margin though as I don't see many failures.

clutches seem to be good to 700lbs or so. after that its a crap shoot I am sure.

I have seen ten seconds passes without failure.

for example the GT500's gearbox is rated at 650lbs and comes with 630lbs. they seem to beholding well though. 9 second passes on the stock.

I have had a syncro fail in a tremec but I have had good luck with strength to date.

ok, the 6l90s in the zl is basically the same as the 80.. the diff is it has one more clutch pack per gear.. they are a little longer because of it. the trans life is 100% dependent on the tuneup.. you can eat a 6 speed gm auto behind a stock motor with a incompotent tuner behind the keyboard... the 90 has shown to be a very good unit.. the 80, eh, not so much.. i have been dealing with these 6 speed autos since 07.. my vette was one of RPMS test cars for 6l80 stuff... they stopped building them for the average customer because Rodney (owner) could not trust his trans going out and then getting givin to just any tuner to blow it up and make him look bad....alot of cts-v guys have went into the bottom 10s on stock trans... the biggest problem is the line pressure and the fact if you stall them you cant jack it up enough to compinsate for a smaller converter and the shift timing most guys end up trying to make to short... the newest tunes that GM uses in the latest trans are really good.. in 07, they were JUNK.. the solinoids are MUCH better in the new trans also...each gear has its own. 1-2-3 clutches are on one shaft and 4-5-6 are on another... the 4-5-6 clutches are TINY little thinigs that give up easy.

I fought with my 80 for years and told myself that if the trans in the zl1 gets finicky it is going on a shelf.. being a camaro we have such a great option to just put a 4l80 in them it is silly to fight with the 6 speed. the vettes are diff and require MAJOR cutting and changes to get that trans to work while hese only require a DS and few minor changes...

that being said, the fastest zls (9 sec cars) are doing ok with the current 6l90s...my honest recomendation after having fought with them.. leave the stock converter in it.. it will live a long time..
hope this helps
