Valve seat broke and valve seal gone!

Name: image.jpg
Views: 385
Size: 160.8 KBI pulled the valve cover today to check everything out. The left bank had a piece of rubber and a very thin metal shaving in it. I Found the first pic. Pulled those springs and the intake seat was in 3pieces and the exhaust seal was gone. Any one know what would cause this? I installed the JRE rough idle cam kit about 8k miles ago. I had no symptoms that any thing was wrong. Thanks for the help.

What springs are those? What's your pushrod length?

926 springs are no joke regarding spring pressures. I have those same ones but because I'm using an LsR cam. I doubt that cam has aggressive lobes like that, with that being said do you warm up the car to operating temps before getting on it? Do you make that a habit or do you just turn on and Go?

I ALWAYS warm it up first. I have read the threads about broken springs.

Those small bits went somewhere. That would have me worried. Good luck.

Most of the big chunks were still inside the spring. I just changed the oil about 100 miles ago. I am going to open up the filter and see what it caught. Hope for the best I guess.

Gotcha! Good practice to warm it up.

Did you check the installed height?

That's the spring seat not the valve seat. I at first thought you had a valve seat failure which would have been a lot worse than this.

This was my thought as well. If it maybe sat a little crooked or a small piece of debri fell under the seat as it was being installed leaving an air gap under the seat.

I believe that's why the spring seat broke, but I wonder why the exhaust valve spring ate the valve seal. Maybe the ID of the spring is tight? The car didn't smoke at all. Just weird to me.

Didn't read the entire thread, but I hope someone corrected the OP that that isn't the valve seat but rather the spring seat instead. Huge difference and you would have know about a valve seat failure long before you torn into the motor.

I'm guessing the same. The seat wasn't sitting properly.

Well I'm glad you caught it on time bud and I hope the piston and valve did not kiss!

Call comp in the morning ask for Gabe Grey iirc that's his name and he might be able to send you another spring. He's s very cool guy and he's gonna want some pics so have them ready which I know you do now lol.

Keep us posted bud.

It's seems the spring is fine. I got the heads off no evidence of the piston and valve kissing. Some of the lifters have some wear nothing major. Cam lobes look fine. I changed my oil about 100 miles ago and still had the oil and filter. I cut the filter open and it was clean. Stirred a magnet around in the old oil it was clean too. Gonna do another oil and filter change and see what I come up with. Is there a magnet in our oil pans?
