Chevy C6 vs. Shelby GT500

ok i know its not a camaro but i thought i ask these forums since you guys know alot about muscle cars and what not. so i have decided to buy a C6 over a camaro SS.
my cousin has a 2009 Shelby GT500 and he says he will take me in a straight from a roll and a dig. but when i bring up the twisties he shuts up lol. but anyways i made him a bet that once i get my LS3 if i lose to him from roll or a dig il buy him his aftermarket exhaust system. if i win hell buy me a exhaust system. he accepted the deal and once i buy my ls3 i am set to race him. so what do you guys think??? should i even be worried? im pretty sure i can take him in a straight as well... i would think even a ls2 vette would take a gt500 as well.

so what you guys think?

How well can he drive? How well can you drive? What are your racing, quarter mile, eighth mile, top end? There are too many unknowns in your question to give you a definite answer.

However, if you are racing from a dig, then I believe it will be really close, as both cars are capable of mid-12's stock. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on you in the Corvette.

i would say were just about equally good drivers. i dont have a vette yet so i havent gone to track...but i believe the vette would win from a dig and roll...but dont know if for sure. also i would like to know how a ls2 would stack up against gt500

i have driven a gt500 and its monster in roll races...i havent tried a c6 yet so i wouldnt know for sure

Dig is a driver's race. The roll may be interesting...you are lighter, but the GT500 may have more TQ...it should be interesting....Not sure what a stock gt from a roll can do. If I compare to my S/C car, it may pull you. But then again I make well over 430 tq.

There was an article written ages ago in Car & Driver that pitted a LS2 Corvette to a 2007 GT500 and the Corvette edged the Shelby by .1 of a second (12.8 @ 113 vs 12.9 @ 112), but be wary that a stock GT500 with a good driver is good for a few tenths more than what C&D got out of their mule that day. The Corvette is going to handle better and own the GT500 in a top speed race.

LS2 or LS3, I still think it will come down to the driver with an edge to th LS3.

Power to weight would say LS3 C6 > GT500 > LS2 C6. But all are close. Too many variables to consider other than it's a good match up.

That's a heck of a bet though. Update us when you get your car. I have a feeling things may change by then.

Depends if he is stock or not. If he is you should win with an LS3.

Or you could just fork over around 75-80k, get the Z06, and have ABSOLUTELY no worries.

I would bet on the vette as well, but it will be a close race ... (stock for stock that is). If the Gt500 has some mods, I'll vote Gt500.

May be a dumb question and off topic but I figured garagelogic would know. I was talking to a Ford guy the other day and I had told him that I was looking for a GT500 and that I knew they didn't make an automatic in that car so we didn't get one. (My wife likes to drive fast cars too but hates driving stick and I like to keep her very happy.) With that said, he told me they made a very small number of Auto Gt500's. Is that true or just total BS cause I have never heard of that before.

I would call BS. I have seen people INSTALL a automatic, but I have yet seen any GT500 come factory install auto's. The same with a Terminator Cobra.

How much does it cost to install an automatic. That seems like it might cause some performance loss in the car. If not and not too expensive it would be a good alternative for the wife.

I truly have no ideal Lee. I have never done it on that level....the most I have done was take out my Toploader and drop a built C4 into my 65...I have read about people doing this to setup for racing...I'll see if I can find a thread or two on some of the forums I belong to. Also I can give my bud a call....he does work for ATF, a tranny shop down here in S. FlA that may be able to shed some light on it.

That is bull. They have never made an automatic GT500. The only autos I know of were swaps made by private parties after taking delivery. The Shelby GT's, however, were offered with automatics.

So the guy I spoke with confused the Shelby GT's with the GT500 most likely. I see. He said about 290 were made and they were limited but I could go over to Ford and put in an order for an Auto GT500. Thanks for the clarification guys.

Also remember the Corvette's IRS wasn't designed for "drag racing". As a long time vette owner I have always disliked these comparisons.

The vette's designers spend almost all or their R&D and testing on road courses, handling, braking, top speed stability etc. A vette "designed" for drag racing would trailer any competition if that was their goal.

Consider its power to weight ratio of 7.48 pounds per HP and aero cd of less than .29 along with an almost perfect 49/51 weight distribution.

If you want to drag race I submit there are much better platforms than a new vette. It does OK, but come on guys we all know it's designed to turn and stop first.

All I know is that at Road America Wis I started 60 seconds behind a GT500 and within 3 laps I had already passed him and put over 1 minute on him before our 7 lap session ended.

I think everyone who has contributed to this thread is in agreement with you on the huge differences between a GT500 and a Corvette when it comes to running on a road course. As you pointed out, it is designed with that in mind as its primary purpose.

However, unless I am mistaken, the OP was talking about a roll or drag race with his friend, not a friendly competition on a road course.

I have a C6 LS3 08 Vette and I have raced 1 of these from a stop, jumped him taking off and he never passed me...He kept up for 1/8-1/4 of mile after that it was bye bye little mustang.....

Race him first to 180mph and the Exhaust is YOURS!!!!! :o)
