Head and VVT Cam Package

Hey Everyone:

So here is my plan for the car over the next few months:

Ordering bare Trick Flow GenX 255 heads through Advanced Induction. They will be installing BTR valve spring kit and Manley valves.

I'll also be ordering a custom VVT cam through Pat G.

I know I will also have to purchase the DOD delete kit, lifters, trunion upgrade or all new rockers, oil pump and timing set. Am I missing anything here?

I'm on the fence with a stall. I was thinking of a cam that will allow me to retain the stock converter. The reason is for streetability. My wife will be driving the car so I have to keep it smooth. I don't have plans for track use I just want to have power throughout the rev range and have that power at any RPM when the peddle is mashed.

If I have to go with a stall I would need something that will keep the drivability near stock. Is this possible? What size should I be looking at? Are there any other items I am leaving out/neglecting with my plan?

Thanks for the input.

Thanks 62nalide.

That is another dilemma. I am considering having Pat G. remote tune with the help of T and T. There are only a few tuners that have experience with VVT tuning and Pat has had lots of experience with VVT.

The other bonus is no matter what changes I make in the future Pat will update the tune for free.

I'll be sure to provide lots of photos and status updates as I move along.

You have some quality parts for sure.

BUT a cam with a stock converter and all those good parts will be pointless if you ask me bud. The drivability will be fine I'd say with at least a 3400 stall. Just my .2 bud.

I would put a 3200 single disc and it will still drive very good.

No offense taken to any input. That's what I'm looking for. So would the addition of the stall affect instant throttle response I'm looking for with this setup?

Any brands that are known to work well on the street?

Jeff I would have recommended this multi disc converter for him but he said he wouldn't be taking it to the track, so going triple would be a waste. But either is a great choice!

Sweet. Sounds like I will be purchasing a stall to go with the heads and cam.

I learned a lot today about the new Trick Flow heads. Due to the 12 degree valve angle the heads use the LS7 length valves vs. the stock LS3 length. The LS7 valves can be turned down to the factory 2.165 and 1.60 diameters to fit the TF heads.

Advanced Inductions will be completing the assembly for me. In case anyone is considering using AI, they have been super responsive to all my questions and concerns. Due to this new info on the TF heads the price has increased significantly. However for the money I get one of the top flowing heads on the market, the best spring package available (BTR) and assembly by a highly respected machine shop.

I'll be installing hollow shaft Manley intake valves to lighten the weight. I checked the price of the Ti valves. $100+ PER valve. Not right now, thank you. Also not real sure you can turn the Ti valves down?

That really sucks that the valves are LS7 length. This is bad news and the first I'm hearing about it. Even if you do use hollow SS valves they still wont be as light as the factory LS3 valves and if you want the valve weight to be close to LS3 your going to need titanium which is big bucks. The whole valve situation just shot these heads up in price big time. I'm sure you could use the solid SS valves that come with the assembled kit but I dont even want to know how much those weigh because those will be heavier than standard solid SS valves. I would make sure Pat G knows what the weight of the longer valves will be when he specs you out a cam. Good luck on your build. I'm in for results and i'm sure they will make alot of power. I'm just bummed about the whole valve size situation because I was looking at using those heads myself

So for one who wants similar mods and uses the car for daily use and 6 to 7 road course days.... which stall?

If I had to guess I would say a very small stall like 2400 or no stall at all.

Don't forget you'll need the custom vvt phaser tables built for the camshaft. That's exactly why all the Texas Speed VVT camshafts are engine dyno tested & developed for the best possible power at each rpm. Without the ability to develop a proper VVT table you'll be leaving power on the table.

You really have me rethinking my decision on having LS7 turned down to fit. I may just go with the assembled heads and in the future when a light weight hollow valve becomes available, I switch at that time.

I have time to decide and maybe something will be available quicker than I think and it will be a non-issue.

I dont think I would want to run the standard SS solid valves. It just seems to me that would be too much weight to try and control. Are the hollow intake valves for these heads a special order custom made valve or are they like a re worked LS7 valve? How much are they? If I were you I would voice these concerns with Pat G and see what he thinks. Good luck. Keep us posted

Update:

A light weight valve is now available for the new TFS GenX 255 heads. I am actually having BTR install the valves and his Platinum spring kit. Brian thinks the heads should be ready to ship in the next few days.

I had Pat G spec a VVT cam for me. It will not be as large a cam as some might think I should get. It's middle of the road. The reason mostly is drivability for now. I'll be able to grow with the heads when drivability is less of a concern.

I'll post photos when the heads arrive.
