hex vents

anyone running them without the splash trays? wondering if the trays essential as I would imagine heat would vent faster without them

Yes, I've had the vents installed since June of last year with no trays. I've had the car in wicked rain storms for hours on end with no problems. You are correct, the heat escapes much faster without the trays.

Once you set the tray studs up its only a minute to throw on the trays.

"Tree crap" doesn't really explain anything. The vents come with mesh, so if it's leaves you're referring to then that will keep that kind of "tree crap" out.

What holds the black insulating blanket tight against the hood when you don't use the trays? I'm seriously thinking about having them installed if I can find anyone in Phoenix to do it, but I don't need the splash pans and was planning to leave them off. I saw a thread where they were planning to make a trim ring for the inside that would hold the blanket up, but they scrapped the idea and went with modified splash pans.

the threaded holes for the pans could be used as threaded studs with rod and then two black alum bars across the studs would hold the blanket back up against the hood...very easy mod--also a bead of hi heat silicone could be used...
