580 hp. Extremely heavy. Geared for acceleration...not economy.

M5 puts out more power stock and is heavier.
So I'm still looking for answers...

And we don't use 580 hp 100 percent of the time. Are these cars super rich from the factory?

Seriously?

It's a V8, 6.2 Liter engine pulling a 4000 lb car? what did you expect? Even ecoboosted trucks are lucky to get 22-25 MPG on the highway.

let's see

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find....32392&id=33075

Smaller displacement, larger fuel tank, and it averages 1 mpg more than the ZL1. Not statistically significant.

Really it's a ZL1. Did you buy it for good gas mileage. If you did u must be slow. Lol only kidding. It's a MUSCLE CAR SCREW GAS MILEAGE.

That's like saying, why is the Prius so freaking slow!

I was getting a little over 16 mpg during break in. Now that my foot is in it, it's dropped to 15. I think that's pretty damn good for a supercharged V8 making 580 hp! Plus it's heavy!

We are not producing 580 hp 100 percent of the time though. I get it. I've had 600 rwhp cars before. I get it.

Stock the highest I got was around 16mpg. The performance parts and tune really helped out, but not when I put the pedal to the metal

Your claim is that the M5 gets better gas mileage than the ZL1. The EPA estimates say the difference is 1 MPG. That is not statistically significant.

Besides, we've given you the answer. It's a larger displacement engine, geared for racing.

You also claimed that the M5 puts out more power, according to what I can find it puts out 560 HP in a 4.4L engine. The ZL1 is a 6.2L 580 HP engine.

Also the ZL1's aerodynamics produce a positive DOWN FORCE Vector which is an increase in drag. Thus a loss of gas mileage. I'm betting the aerodynamics of the BMW are a positive lift vector to boost MPG. If the ZL1 didn't have the hood extractor it would produce a positive lift vector that would improve fuel economy.

No claims here. I own both. BMW underrates the M5 power. But you know this. Bring your car to Houston and let's run them.

Actually the 2013 M5 puts out less hp and torque than a 2013 ZL1.

And it has a smaller displacement (4.4 Dohc) v8 using turbos to get its power numbers. Which would explain the subtle mpg difference between the two vehicles.

But IMO any one bitching about mpg on a $60k 580hp car be it a BMW or a chevy or anything else really needs to have their head examined.

Either you sacrifice mpg for performance or performance for mpg.

The numbers are right there on the window sticker when you buy, if you didn't concern yourself with it before signing the bill of sale what does it matter after the fact?
