Cool corvette base engine

whats the difference in the engine the vette uses and the one in the camaro?

vette engine, notice the increase in hp with the dual mode exhaust:

6.2L V8 SFI Engine
The 6.2L small-block V8 is both proven and powerful. It's rated at 430 hp and 424 lb-ft of torque with the standard exhaust system. An optional dual-mode exhaust system brings a power rating increase to 436 hp and 428 lb-ft.

Iirc it's just the exhaust that makes the difference in hp. It's really not much and I don't think GM wants to market a corvette with the same amount of hp as a Camaro. Just my .2 sir.

Same engine, just different exhaust systems.

It has a dry sump oil system too (as does the 1LE I think). I don't think it would affect HP but it's a difference and you asked lol

1LE is not dry sump, and only certain models of the Grand Sport are hand built dry sump.

Hand built ls3 for GS Vette...ehh sounds like bs. Its the same engine. Exhaust and hp are pure BS. Only difference is the dry sump for GS. Only handbuilt n/a ls is the LS7.

The dry sump LS3 was built in Wixom along side the LS9, LS7, and the GMPP crate engines.

Learn something new everyday(thats why I said it sounds like bs). In fact, I was typing from my cell and was lazy to google it and found the info 5sec later on my PC.

I guess it makes a huge difference when its handbuilt with automated tools Guess GS Vette owners can feel special while having the same HP as a factory built LS3 Camaro/Vette engine. Still the same parts except the dry sump. I do prefer hand built engine though.

Is there any crate engine that goes into a Corvette? Because I thought Vette engine was the subject in this thread. But thanks for sharing that too.

What about the special NPP exhaust giving 6h 4tq to the Vette and not the Camaro? Know anything about this that you would like to share?

Vette are putting more to the ground on dynos because of torque tube from what I read. But since the Camaro has the electric power steering, it helps closing the small gap.
------------------------------
From Jalopnik:
That's all well and good, but we suspect the part that'll get Corvette owners talking is the engine. It's an LS3, yes, but with some very tasty upgrades. All Grand Sports get a forged steel crankshaft instead of the standard cast iron piece which can withstand higher loads for longer times as wells as tri-metal main bearings that'll take a whole lot more abuse than standard ones. On the manual transmission cars, you get a dry-sump oil system standard, with a higher flow and higher pressure oil pump and a 10.5-quart capacity, that dry sump occupies the same space as the battery normally gets, so it's moved to the rear as a result. Because of the dry sump complexity, the engine is being built by hand right alongside the LS7 and LS9. That means you get a properly balanced engine and a reinforced bottom end for the price of admission on the "cheap" Grand Sport model. Add to that the differential cooler at the rear and you have exactly what you need for a solid track day. Sounds pretty good to us.
-------------------------------
Cool features, didnt know about the forged crankshaft. But LS crankshafts arent really weak, forged rods and pistons would have been better IMO. Seems like auto doesnt get dry sump so its not handbuilt??

I see this all the time and it drives me insane. Could somebody name one person from GM, a person that actually matters, that has said, "we can't have a camaro with the same HP as a corvette." One person?

I believe it sounds stupid too. Its a marketing thing. Like in 98 whgen the LS1 Camaro had 300hp and the Vette 350hp LOL Plus both the manifolds from the Camaro/Vette are interchangeable and the rest of the exhaust is pretty similar in size and design..

Good thread on the subject;
Corvette forums;
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...lt-engine.html

Some quick highlights; forged crank because it needs an extra sprocket for the dry sump and it seems the auto GS are not handbuilt.

Wixon vid

From Corvette Forums;
The GS Coupe with the M6 manual transmission gets the dry sump engine and are hand built at Wixom.
All GS convertable cars (regardless of transmissionss) and GS Coupes with the A6 transmission don't have the dry sump oil system and are not hand built at Wixom.
Regardless whether or not they were 2010, 2011 or 2012 models.
