Question 4 speed problem

Hey guys, im just looking for some opinions on this problem.I have a 78 z28 with a rebuilt 350 and the stock 4 speed trans, and sometimes when i go from a stand still my car will violently shake. It only happens from time to time but it shakes like it is possessed and wants to shake every bolt loose on my car. The trans also slips out of 2nd gear on occasions if im not on the gas (not sure if that is related but i thought i would throw it in there) and only in second gear. Im at school now and i dont have my car so no rush, but i would love to get some opinions so when i go home for a weekend i can check it out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance

Motor/tranny mounts comes to mind first. The rubber can separate from the metal and cause a lot of problems. You want to look closely at the drivers side motor mount in particular. Don't just peek at them as they may look 100% fine at a glance. You can put a thick block of wood under the oil pan (to prevent denting it) and jack up the engine to see if the drivers side motor mount or tranny mount is shot. They will separate if they are trashed.

The clutch will be the next thing to check after those.

This slipping out of gear may be related to the bad motor/tranny mounts so check those first. Slipping out of gear by itself can be several things but the cheapest thing to check would be the shifter adjustment. Usualy that is not the problem but you want to check the easy cheap stuff first. If the mounts are not failed and the shifter is all aligned, you probably have a worn synchronizer slider and/or clutch teeth on the second gear. The symptoms would be popping out of gear especially when getting on and off the gas. That can only be repaired during a tranny overhaul.

Let us know what you find.

-Mark.

I had a 79 4 spd. years ago and it did the same thing. I replaced the clutch and never had the problem again.Selling that car is one of the biggest regrets I've ever had.
