ZL1

Convince me to buy a ZL1! I have driven two so far. One was very average and actually felt slow (cold night, car had 12 miles on it). 2nd one (different dealer) CRT, was extremely fast, about 90 degrees and chirped thru 3rd gear and back end was constantly breaking loose. Both cars were in whatever mode when you initially start the car up. Im highly considering buying an SS or 1LE and do headers, cam, magnaflow 3" and suspension upgrades.

Help ASAP. purchasing tomorrow.

thanks,
DH

ZL1 is worth the extra money for the magnetic ride technology, better brakes, bigger rear & axles, and styling. The gauge cluster is better looking too. You can justify the extra cost easily when you consider how much those upgrades would cost on an SS or 1LE. The wheel/tire combo is also way better on a ZL1. A few bolt ons and you are flying in a ZL1 which the biggest jump comes at reasonable prices. With only a bigger lower pulley 9.6", 90mm TB, tune, CAI and drag radials, my car would run low 11s all day long. Even with headers, bigger lower ring (10" now), upgraded heat exchanger, and no cats my car isn't much faster. Drive them both again and check the details before your purchase. I love the A6 in my ZL1. Good luck!

Nah. You got to want one. If someone needs to convince you to buy a $60k car, you'll always regret it. I wanted one and bought one. Didn't need or want anyone else's opinion, its my car payment so my decision. I did ask if $3k off sticker was a good deal, but in the end it's always your decision.

Payments arent the issue and the car is definitely badass, just asking from having three C6 vettes and a modded SS, if the car was as fast initially as you guys/gals thought it would be. One just seemed like an average car and not a 580hp.

If driving it didn't convince you, you shouldn't buy one.

Convince you? Sounds like to me you can't afford the ZL1. Prove ME otherwise.

I don't understnd how a ZL1 could feel "average."
Better to consider what you are comfortable with rather than what we have to say. Either you feel "it" or you don't.

One might have had low octane gas in it which might explain the difference in performance.

Don't buy it, you're not ZL1 market type. SS upgrade guys were not Chevy's target buyer when they designed the ZL1.

The first Camaro I ever drove was an SS on a test drive. The dealer tried to get me to buy then and there. I told them no that I'm wanting something with more power. A few days later I test drove a ZL1. And now I get my ZL1 around my Birthday next year. Get whatever you are comfortable and happy with. Noone should have to talk you into it. It will be your car and noone elses.

I drove a SS and was not impressed at all with it. I am a GM guy and would not buy anything else. I have owned vettes in the past and liked them but when GM came out with the ZL1 I did not even test drive one,I ordered one! I knew it had to be the best camaro GM ever built and I did not even think twice about ordering it. All I can say to you is I am totally impressed with the car. Besides, you will get more people wanting to look at your ZL1!

The ZL1 is not an average car, I have ran my Kawasaki Ninja 1400 many time at high speeds. My ZL1 makes me smile and excite every time I hit roads.

First of all thanks to this guy for serving, you'll love your ZL1 when you get home.

Second, I don't know what to say to the OP. Some guys say if you need convincing don't get it. Truth is I hadn't driven an SS, last Camaro I really drove was a 2000 V6 and before that a 95 Z28. But given that it was the most powerful production Camaro ever produced I wanted one. I drove two hours, sat in it for maybe 30 seconds, told the salesman lets make a deal. I was buying the car, as long as some flaw that didn't show up on the internet wasn't present.

All that being stated, I went nannies off again today, whewwwwww. That is some experience, you can spin that car around in a second. I mean it is fast anyway, every single time I pull out of my neighborhood I kick the back end a little, with virtually no effort(nannies on).

Attention grabber, go wash one, being that mine is black doesn't hurt, set it out in a parking lot, walk away, and watch the people come up to it. I've been told there are several GT500's in my area, so the hell what, they don't look special, but there are only three ZL1's, and people gravitate to them.

It's a blast, as I tell people, I turn 16 again every time I get in it, and it's my daily driver and that still holds up.

Maybe convince was the wrong word. Just asking opinions on those that have had SS models or other cars how they feel now after ZL purchase. Just recently traded my GrandSport and it felt faster than either ZL that I drove.

No, but I haven't torn up roads in a Vette either for comparison. But It handles a hell of a lot better than any much lighter 4th Gen I've driven.

I'll tell you where I can compare it to a SS. The SS's can't stop anywhere near like a ZL1. My experience is at the drag strip, after smoking a few SS's one thing remains constant, they nearly plow into my ass end near the tun off because they forget that when you upgrade the hp, you have to upgrade everything else including the brakes. ZL1 stops when and where you want it to.

HATE when this is brought up. Just because someone doesn't like it, doesn't mean they can't afford it. If you can afford a cammed SS, you can afford a ZL1. Problem is which would you be happier in. Sounds to me like the SS on the basis you want something YOU make fast versus coming fast from the factory. Only half a second and less difference in a SS and a ZL1 stock for stock. Half a second, and half the price.

Also, the ZL1 in the 10s is geared. Guess that, and slicks are considered "bolt ons." There is no mod list there either, so how is that known? To get to 10s, it takes a supercharger upgrade, gears, slicks, full exhaust, professional tuning, and great driving. A 4000 pound car does not run 10s with just bolt ons.

That's because it WAS faster. All day.

Yeah. A ZL1 does 12s. Professional drivers get an average of 12-12.3 stock depending on stick or auto.

The Nurburgring again. The ZR1 slammed the ZL1 by almost 30 seconds. 7:19. I guess you could say that's "seconds" but I would prefer to call it "almost a half minute". As far as ZR1s over 100k, yes. Brand new, they are. Z06s though have run 11.8- 12.0s consistently on run flats and 75 less hp. I have seen new Z06s in the upper 70s low 80s after incentives. Used with 2k miles, you can get a ZR1 for 71,499 at Carmax all day long. We have one here in Texas for 68,000 with 12k miles on it. I would gladly take that instead of a ZL1 for strictly performance issues.

Don't get caught in fanboy drama. Get what you want, and go with it. You can always make an SS better than a ZL1. You have 30 grand difference to do it. As said before, there is only .5 second difference in a SS and a ZL1. BUT, you can never make an SS.....A....ZL1....if that makes any sense.
