While the 2.5in pipes can handle 700+whp, at that power level, a 3in exhaust will surely help. Think of it another way, Your engine is making around 900 crank hp. Tell me that doesn't deserve a 3in exhaust.

I would agree, hell back in the day a SBC with anything over 500 hp always got 3 inch pipe on it.

I agree but I wouldn't hesitate to leave the stock 2.5in piping on a 500+whp car. Once you're boosted and pushing well over 600whp, you NEED a bigger exhaust.

Hell yeah! If you're doing headers for 10 hp and sound, then you might as well throw a 3" on there too!

I think headers are a stretch enough. I like my no drone 2.5" set up.

Here is a decent unbiased article with science behind exhaust system design
Good link...thing for others to keep in mind on a street car that runs full exhaust is that the gasses are cooling/shrinking as they travel farther away from the engine, so it can maintain velocity in a necked down exhaust as long as the mufflers aren't becoming a restriction creating back pressure which would rob power potential.

Dynomax makes a 3in version of their VT muffler.

I made 483rwhp with my mods and have long tube headers into high flow cats and Borla 2.5" S-type exhaust. I posted the details on my thread "My Night Fury cam install". (I would link to it but don't know how). If you want to make power on an NA motor, you have to at least put headers on, the stock cats (2 on each side) are a fine mesh and will definitely cost you power.

Im running a modified setup using the stock exhaust, Doug Thorley 1 3/4" Tri Y headers, mid pipes "no cats", deleted the resonator "replaced with straight pipe", and replaced the stock suitcases with flowmaster super 10 race mufflers. Sounds great and shed quite a bit of weight

I put down 570 through the stock cat back with muffler delete. I put a 3" cat back on and will go back to the dyno soon.

I'd really like to know what the "pro's" think on how much HP a 2.5" cat back is good for? In planning on running either kooks 1 7/8 headers or LG headers. With either high flow cats or off road pipe. Was thinking I would just run a 3" exhaust from either kooks or LG but I'm really loving the sound of the magnaflow 16580 but it only comes in a 2.5" exhaust. I'm planning on making 750rwhp. Think this exhaust will be ok or will it be to restrictive?
