1LE vs SS w/ 3.91 gears

I'll keep this nice and short and to the point..

I know the 1LE has 3.91 gears but also has a different transmission ratio which is great for track use but kind of negates the rear end on street use...

Looking at 0-60 and quarter mile times I don't see a big difference..

So which one is quicker?

Once again I know the 1LE is setup for track use but if I ever pull the trigger it would see the track/drag less than 10 times a yr..

whichever driver is better. Cars are similiar.

even with the same driver the advantage may flip flop

SS would be faster assuming equivalent tires/traction. SS for the drag strip, 1LE for the road course.

MM6 w/ 3.91
1st gear ratio: 2.66 10.42
2nd gear ratio: 1.78 6.97
3rd gear ratio: 1.30 5.09
4th gear ratio: 1.00 3.91
5th gear ratio: 0.74 2.90
6th gear ratio: 0.50 1.96

M10 w/ 3.45 w/ 3.91
1st gear ratio: 3.01 10.38 11.77
2nd gear ratio: 2.07 7.14 8.09
3rd gear ratio: 1.43 4.93 5.59
4th gear ratio: 1.00 3.45 3.91
5th gear ratio: 0.84 2.90 3.28
6th gear ratio: 0.57 1.97 2.23

Tested this out near the end of last season with a friend. The LS3 SS with 3.91s is faster. With similar bolton mods, power, and driving 12.1 (SS) to 12.3 (1LE) as the best for each car in mine shaft Atco weather. He can launch harder on 20" DRs to my possibly better hooking 18" DRs.

It's still a drivers race, but I can't match his best times. I do get a higher MPH, 1LEs seem to trap higher than SSes. He just added a cam, so next season I will have to red light to beat him.

One more question....could you add the 1LE package to a reg. SS at the dealership for the $3500 that is the normal cost when ordered from the factory?

You can add the 1LE suspension after the fact as well as source some wheels and so on, but I am pretty sure the only way for a true 1LE with all options for or even close to $3500 is to have a factory 1LE.

You could get Factory Reproductions wheels: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=292326

I will be doing this when my tires wear out and doing a 10" setup all the way around.

I wonder if anyone has actually paid that much for them. That is what they cost, but not what they're worth IMO.

Factory reproductions are a great option if you want that look.

It's so close I couldn't see buying an SS because of a 1le for a tenth of a second 0-60 or 2 tenths in the quarter.

It will cost you much more to mod to look like a 1le than the 3500

I've never seen a 1le owner say they wish they had gotten the SS, while many SS owners have said they wish they got the 1le.

But it's up to you

You could get say TSW Nurburgrings for a 3rd the price and with say Michelin Pilot SS tires be at approx. 53 lbs vs the 1LE 60 lbs wheel.

Well if your are a frugle shopper, you can do it without spending 3500. I have done everything to convert my 10 2SS to a 1LE except the 3.91 gear, transmission, and wheels. I've only spent about $800 on springs, sways, control arm change, spoiler, shocks. So 3500 is good if you can hunt and find deals.

I run Nurburgring 18s on the back and they are a great value. Interlagos are even lighter and the same price.

I agree with you after weighing my 1LE wheels. Not much weight savings there, especially the 11 inch wheels in the back and 10s in the front. And the tires are wider/heavier than an SS. So you did get wider tires without a weight penalty and a little weight savings. Net gain. But running in 19s or even 18s is a bigger advantage. You do run into clearance problems with the wider wheels. Get out the grinder to fix.

It is definitely possible to build an SS that will out handle a 1LE for $3,500 with some digging and maybe scoring some used aftermarket wheels. But then you don't get the other stuff. And the 1LE does feel very good 100% stock. But if you already own an SS you can build a monster. It doesn't make a lot of sense to trade an SS for a 1LE. I did it and I am happy with the trade, but then I am an idiot. Just ask my wife.

I like that at the end of the 1/4 mile you are topped out in 4 th gear with the 1LE combination and as for driving on the roads there is nothing more fun than cornering in the LE buy it you won't be disappointed!

Now many will come soon here and say, I'm lying or this can't be, 'cause the 1/4 mile slips on this forum prove otherwise.

I dunno, just sayin' really.

A rematch will be a must.
