Tracking my 1LE with Pedders Supercar Coilovers

I was stricken by a serious case of Track Fever ever since my maiden voyage to Thunderhill Raceway. The cure was to upgrade my machine with some new Pedders go-fast goodies...

Pedders Supercar Coilovers
32mm 1LE Rear Sway Bar
Radius Bushings
Sub-frame Bushings
Trailing Arm Toe Links

Pete worked closely with my local shop throughout the install and to ensure that they made the proper settings for the dampers. I gave it an aggressive track/street alignment with -2.2 degrees front camber, and -1.1 degrees rear. We dropped the front 1/2" and the rear 1", per Pete's recommendation. Although the set up was optimized for handling and not looks, the stance is fantastic- aggressive looking but not so low that it's impractical. No issues so far with speed bumps or driveways.

Other than the suspension upgrades and the Motul 600 high temp brake fluid, my 1LE is stock down to the Goodyear F1 G2's. Alright, enough of the boring details, do you want to hear about how it did on the track?

One word - Nirvana. Wow, did this car perform with such grace and balance. I drove both Saturday and Sunday at Buttonwillow Raceway, configuration 13 counter-clockwise. I ran in the high-intermediate group against a number of very fast cars, including a Z06, some M3's and a Porsche GT3 RS.

I have to say that the stock 1LE handles amazingly well, but if you'd like to get rid of that last bit of understeer at the limit, reduce dive and body roll, this set up is a bulls-eye. The spring rate is surprisingly soft and the dampers are very smooth. The car is easy to drive near the limit and comfortable to catch when you overdrive it.

By the second day, I was posting some of the fastest laps in my group, with a best of 2:05.79. Not bad for a 3,850 pound car on this technical track! I ended up playing tag with the GT3 RS, as we were pretty evenly matched most laps. However, the trophy went to the bowtie as my Camaro's fastest lap was a full second faster than the Porsche's best effort.

Here was one of my favorite laps, not my fastest but I had a lot of fun chasing down the Porsche and others...

The weekend was not without drama and some comedy, as I did have a couple of off-track excursions as you will see in final the picture below. That's my instructor behind me studying my line, I guess I couldn't take the pressure I had an absolute blast! I'm hoping to return to Buttonwillow again October 19 -20, hope some of you guys can join me.

Awesome set up. Also great pictures. Any more pics? BTW are Supercar Coilovers lighter than stock? Just curious. I know they're great overall but was just wondering.

You're rocking out there!! Very technical track...pavement is in need of a refresh.
Curious to know which car had the best time and what was it?
Thanks.

Good question on the weight of the Supercars, I don't know. However, they give you more clearance than stock to fit wider rubber

I see some wide R compounds in my near future. There was a guy at the track in a race-prepped Camaro that was running 315s all the way around. He had coilovers, but I didn't have time to ask him what brand.

Here are a few more pics. Buttonwillow is a hot dustbowl out in the middle of nowhere, but not a bad sunset.

Thanks.
In my class (high intermediate) I had the fastest time. There were a couple of big aero cars on R compounds from the advanced group that were smokin' fast. Here are the times that I can remember:

Advanced Group
1:58.xx Black late-model M3 with big aero, coilovers and R compounds
2:00.xx Red S2000 with big aero, plastic and carbon fiber body, supercharged, R compounds
2:09.xx Corvette C6 Z06, stock

High Intermediate Group
2:05.79 My 1LE with coilovers
2:06.79 Porsche GT3 RS, stock
2:07.xx Z4 M with coilovers
2:08.xx M3 black/yellow with aero, coilovers
2:16.xx Corvette C6 Z06, stock

The BMW driver told me that his wing and splitter are good for 3 full seconds at this track. I'm sure R compounds would shave another 2+ seconds off. It was clear that some of the big-wing cars were in a class of their own. I'd like to look into aero for my Camaro, but don't think I'd go as far as a giant wing. Awefully tempting, especially for the faster tracks near me like Laguna Seca and Thunderhill.

Tom, I will likely be out there again with Speedventures Oct 19 - 20. Join me if you can. They will be running clockwise then, so it will be time to learn the track all over again. Hopefully without any more off-track adventures, LOL.

From reading this it is your 2nd or 3rd track day? I am curious why you chose to change the 1LE suspension over to the Pedders Supercars etc? I am asking as I have found the car to be very very capable in stock form as well as with just Pedders springs. I am running stock Corvette GS (magazine) times at two different tracks with stock pads, tires, motor and found the shortcoming of the car for me are the rear diff and the seat.

Just curious why you chose the suspension first for upgrades?

FYI: Here are the lap times from Fastlaps.com for conf. 13

I've considered aero mods too but can't bring myself to do something gaudy, I like confusing them with something that looks completely stock. Some of the higher options that use stock mounting points like the GMPP high spoiler or the aftermarket one pieces that mimic it would work and flow reasonably well, and would be a quick swap back to stock. And the one piece types wouldn't require drilling holes in the rear quarters.

Still waiting for someone to mimic the new Z28 front spoiler that works with the current SS front end.

Unrestricted Motorsports one I've considered for track day duty. But I'm too lazy to paint something. Probably just keep buying hp.

I suggest you wait on any aero mods until the ultimate parts car hits the showroom floor when tunnel and track tested aero is available from your local Chevy Dealer.

These were my 7th and 8th track days, 3rd and 4th in the Camaro. I took the Ron Fellows driving school, and am returning for Level 2 in a couple of weeks. Fantastic instruction, good mix between classroom and track time. I went with the Supercar coilovers because some of the fastest Camaros are running them. Very happy with the results.

I was impressed with your lap times at Grattan with the Pedders springs. If I hadn't already ordered the coilovers I may have switched to just the springs bushings and rear bar, nice run!

Any thoughts on what you're going to do for a seat? I share your frustration with the stock seats. I was initially thinking about the Recaros that are now available in the 2014s, but am reconsidering. I'd prefer lighter, non-powered seats.

Exactly, something like this I much prefer over the humungous wings. Although I have to admit that the wings are growing on me, can't argue with results. They just look ricer, LOL

A little stiffer but surprisingly comfortable! I didn't have time to soften the damping settings from the initial settings Pete recommended for the track. I'll probably do that soon for street duty. Not hard to adjust, but you have to jack it up and crawl under to do so. Even set as is, I don't mind the ride at all.
