Seems a little fishy.

A few weeks ago I sent a request to Ford for some footage of the 2013-14 (we're not sure which, not that it makes a difference) SVT Shelby GT500 testing at various tracks. I had planned on putting together a little montage video of the baddest Mustang produced to date. SVT and Ford has always been very accommodating with our media and information requests, and this was no different. However, once the thumb-drive arrived things got really interesting.

Mixed in with the various clips from the various tracks was one that stood out; a full all-out test lap from The Nürburgring. As far as I know, Ford has not released any official 'Ring lap times or footage for the GT500. I have a feeling that this video file may have been included erroneously, but Ford did say I could use everything on the drive. So that leads us to the video above.

I trimmed a little off each end of the file and added a timer. I based the starting and ending points from conversations I've had with various "'Ring-Run Experts". It appears that most timed laps begin at the exit of pit row and ends at the first white stripe after the gantry. That description may sound a bit vague, but it'll all become clear once you watch the video.

By my rough calculations, which are no replacement for proper vBox data, the 2013-14 GT500 ran its 'Ring lap in a bit less than 7:40. Not only is that very impressive; but it also bests the SVT's chief rival, the Chevy Camaro ZL1's 7:41. In fact; it's just a few tics behind GM's purpose-built stripped-out track-car , the Camaro Z/28 and its 7:37.5. However, this is where things get very interesting. While there's really no such thing as an "official" lap time at The Nürburgring, if GM was trying to use the same starting and ending points as most it appears that Chevy may have fudged their numbers ever-so-slightly.

In doing my research on the timing points I took a frame by frame look at GM's Camaro videos. I noticed that with the ZL1 they appeared to start the clock ~6 frames late, but with the Z/28 they stopped the clock ~11 frames early. Both of these instances shaved less than 0.5 seconds off the lap time. Still, I thought it was worth noting. However; as I stated before; producing manufacturer backed 'Ring times is not an exact science, nor are my video based calculations:

Yeah, he added the timer and miraculously got a 7:40? And who knows if it was even stock? I guess I am just skeptical naturally lol.

Even if that is a good time, it sure looks like the person driving really had to manhandle the thing to get there.

See this is where putting a "timer" on a video to get a lap time is far from scientific. The video is shot at 30 FPS. I would think that it would have to be played back at exactly 30 FPS to get close to an accurate time. Probably just me though.

with 662HP the only way it did better is in the straights. Z28 still WRECKED the GT500.

If Ford could have run this time w/ a Vbox it would be broadcast all over the place.

That GT 500 has some mods obviously to the rear end. SLA isn't bad at all, it's not that ancient folks...it does work.

LOL....

Where does one begin on this. Sure I'll hand it to the GT500....it performs damn good.

But first off the time stand was added to this video. I understand the guy that added the timestamp says he carefully did it to help ensure accuracy...but still. You can't take this as official. No way.

Next....the guy is suggesting that GM may have fudged their times a bit based on what he found trying to put these videos together?? How desperate sounding is that?

They claim Ford "doesn't care" about ring times, and neither do they....yet in the very same thread they are making all of these exaggerations. Ridiculous.

Again...not putting down the Shelby....just this LOL of a thread.

The video is from Ford. It is stock. I bet that Z28 was modded though. See what I did there?

If anyone really believes that Ford is "sitting" on a better Ring time than the ZL1 they are the definition of gullible. Just like they Ford wouldn't let the magazines have a Boss to compare to the 1LE because the GT track pack was the better comparison. Too awesomely funny!

Interesting a non official time with zero specs is being considered accurate by them. Maybe it had a lot better tire on it? I am not saying it isn't possible, just skeptical.

First

I wouldn't be surprised if it ran a fast time. The GT500 did beat the ZL1 around a few tracks. Add in the straights were the ZL1 ran down the Z/28 and that GT500 does the same but even faster.

Second

If they are skeptical of GMs times, then they cannot take this seriously at all.

I wouldn't take the timing as official in any way. There's no way to know how precise the timing is. However, the video does prove that the GT500 is much more capable than some of the professional ZL1 fanboys would have you believe. Z/28 is playing a whole different game though.

Seriously gullible or one hell of a fanboi. Why would ford ever sit on a faster time then the ZL1?

What do you expect? Its a faster car.

If it had 285/305 like the Camaros, it would probably have bettered the Z28.

Not a big deal.

I'm not really sure why this is surprising to anyone. The 500 has such a huge advantage in power and weight that it's straight line speeds can make up for it's lack of grip into the corners. In regards to the Z-28, Ford's answer will be soon with the release of the next generation GT350/500 which will ride on a completely new suspension.

Watching the side by side video you can see the ZL1 is quicker in the tight S's, but the 500 pours it on in the straights.

It's going to be a sad day in here as The Ring time, was the crowned jewel of the forum.
