Funny response from a dealer

Here's the story. I was looking at a 2012 45th SS at a local auto dealership. It has 20+k on the odo. They had it priced at $33k which I thought was high, so I did some looking around on Yahoo autos. I happened to find one that was almost identical up in Texarkana. The only difference I could see was it was automatic. But it was priced at $27k.

So I sent the local dealership manager an email with the link and asking if he could match that price. Texarkana is only a couple of hours away, so I told him I wouldn't mind making the drive up there to check it out on the weekend. Here's his response:

"If you check, our Camaro (matched option for option) is priced very aggressively based on national pricing. We truly wish we could get the price you are asking for, however, that would represent a large loss on the car and it is a very sellable vehicle. Please call us and let's make a deal that works for both of us."

In other words, no. Very sellable vehicle? I guess that's why the Carfax report shows it's been sitting on their lot since July.

Some dealers just sit on cars forever. The ones that sell cars actually make deals.

The auto may be a more expensive option, but a less desirable IMO

In this case the automatic is listed at $6,000 less than the manual. The manual does have Hurst shifter, but still - for the automatic that's a big freaking difference.

$27k is a good price for an almost 2yr old car with 20k mileage.

You can buy a brand new 2014 1SS coupe manual nicely equipped for $35k per the Chevy build site.... so that is but $2k more than the car the other schmoe is trying to pawn off on you.

Were both cars 45th anniversary models, as that may be part of the price difference.

BTW, can't wait to see the golden (50th) anniversary Camaros!

Hell, I bought my 2010 2SS/rs new for 36100 ttl. So youd be a fool to pay anything over $28 for either car.

You need to make the trip to see the other car, and then decide if they are equal. there are many factors that determine the price dealers charge for cars, overhead at the dealership is number one. Since both cars are used I would say that the higher priced local car the dealer made a great deal on the trade in and can afford to sit on the car and get his money. You would have a better chance of price matching on a new Camaro, not a used car.

Funny, when I was looking to buy a 5th gen SS all I could find in the Mid-Atlantic region were 6 spds and the Auto SS's that were out there were selling like hotcakes.

Not always the case. You got a nice deal on your car but it's one that a good majority of buyers will not get.

For a 45th anniversary car you have to figure it was a $3000-$4000 up-charge on a Camaro 2SS, and considering the unique paint & appearance appointments the value of the car is a little more than a regular SS. Most 2012 SS's are selling for $30k-$33k right now.

OP - You do need to check into the car in Texarkana and see how it compares to the car for $33k. I'm guessing the the SS for $27k is a 45th Anniversary edition as well?? That's the other difference maker in pricing as I mentioned above.

As a former Internet Manager for a dealership, I can tell you that even if they would ultimately be willing to come down on price for you, they are unlikely to do it over email. Not saying they won't, but showing up in-person, ready to buy the car (or at least appearing ready), is when you'll have the most leverage on price.

No one is going to negotiate online. If you're not in the store to discuss pricing, then you're not reasonably capable of buying a car from them. Think about it. You have to sign paperwork to buy a car. If you can't pick up a pen right there and sign, then you can't buy the car. That's why they won't negotiate over the Internet or over the phone.

Think I found the Texarkana car online- Yep- its a 45th.

Clean Carfax and original dealer who sold it new was one exit down from dealer who has it now. They may be able to give you a service history on it.

I've negotiated ONE used car online (and over the phone), and had it delivered with 2
days. Signed the deal on my dining room table. Salesman had a porter follow him 150 miles to make the drop off and give him a ride back.
Whole deal was subject to me liking the car.

so your surprised that private party is cheaper than the dealership? I would think you'd expect it.

I had no problem negotiating over the phone. they wouldn't do email, but I had everything settle before I went in for the test drive. I told them I didn't need to buy a car and I wasn't wasting my time at their dealership. told them we either settled everything before I went up or I wouldn't waste any more of their time.
