Taken from the Car Guys weekly letter.

July 1st announced the arrival of the new seven-digit license plates the Texas Department of Transportation is now distributing.

Seven digits are now necessary because the state has gone through all the unique combinations of six-digit numbers and letters after more than 31 million pairs.
The license plates also have a new look - a hilly landscape below the classic, azure blue sky every Texan knows by heart, with the familiar phrase "The Lone Star State" remaining at the bottom.

The previous background most are acquainted with depicted oil rigs, a horse-mounted cowboy sauntering about a prairie under a nighttime sky, and a NASA space shuttle in the upper left-hand corner. The new plates also no longer have raised digits, but rather are flat and slightly lighter weight, features that make them cheaper for the state of Texas to manufacture.

Still a boring crap plate IMHO....Texas is the second largest state!! We should have the best designed plate out there......

As long as nobody takes mine before I take delivery in the next few weeks, I'll be good to go. Last check it was still available....maybe I need to check again....

I wonder when you can start ordering these? I went online and they still limit to 6 characters ..

Humm makes me think, maybe if you order you still only get 6, and normal issue is not up to 7?

Correct .. just found online in the new license plate fact that you can NOT personalize the new plate. You can only request the 6 character ones.

as of now (like Crowley said), you can NOT get custom 7 digit plates yet. It won't happen for a while.

I received my car on July 2 and got my plates in last week. I guess I just missed the new plates because mine are the old 6 digit. Bummer...

to DFWSS...I was able to order my personalized plates online without a VIN. My local tax office (Collin County) is holding the tags until I get my car.

You might want to check into ordering your tags early if you want to ensure you get your desired letter combination

I guess we'll see what I end up with. Picked up my car on 7/7 and I'm waiting on the plates to arrive. They won't be on long though...I ordered my personalized plates using the "State of the Arts" design today.

They have Dallas Mav's but no spurs or rockets. Gee... think someone at the office is biased a tad? Even after a lot of complaints for the spurs plate they still won't offer one.

If they rotated the first digit you could have 6 custom plus the one rotating...

I got mine way back in January and put on my Lexus for a short time... then I swapped it out with a regular plate and suspended the personnalized one... sold the Lexus and when I got my Camaro all I had to do was re-activate...

Awe man!!!! I took a list of 6 digit ideas for my tags and only one was available, wish I'd known there would be 7. I might have been able to get my favorite, guess I can try again next year...I still like mine for now!

I went to my county office Friday to renew..possibly change my personalized plates... I asked about the 7 digit plates & when they'd be available to customize. She said it will NOT be this year & maybe even not next year. :(

Also she said I could go ahead & order my personalized plates & not assign them to the car. She said just hold onto them & when the car comes in then they can be linked to the car. So.......you CAN buy your plates before you have the car you want to put them on. Strange, but that's what she said.

I'm waiting til I know the car is on it's way... that way I can have them when the car arrives. She said it takes about 2 weeks to get them.

I ended up with the new 7-character plates. Don't really like the look of them too much - too busy looking.

Hopefully my FUN44 plates will be here soon.

My standard plate is ok but I've had personalized tags for years (at least the years I've been in the states)...but LEGEND is not available :-(

...and I don't like LGD or L3G3ND as I'm not into all that interwebs crap <3
