exhaust smoke

I have had white smoke come out of my tailpipe three times. It happened once at the dealer when they were putting the paint protector on. They checked it out and replaced a sensor. It just happened again but the car seems to be running fine.

I have an orange 2 ss coupe.

Anyone heard anything else about this problem.

Alot of times they will use oil to lubricate the stainless pipes in the exhaust when they are bent during manufacturing.Maybe???

Take it to your dealer. Just had the lifters replaced in my SS with 1700 miles. Only smoked once, but it was bad. Mechanic said it had over agressive lifters, blew oil. My car ran fine after also, but it wasn't.

Take it to your dealer. Mine didn't smoke until 1700 miles. Had to have all 16 lifters replaced. Mechanic said it was over-agressive lifters.

white exhaust smoke

I just bought my 2010 2SS today, and had LOTS of white smoke from the exhaust earlier! Anyone else found any reasons for this???

Just under 1000 miles on my 2ss (A6) with no issues... until last night! Went to a movie, so the car had been sitting for about 2 hrs. Let it warm-up for a couple of minutes and then drove off (gently, no heroic movie theater antics!). The theater is in a neighborhood, so it took several minutes of slow driving to get the main road. At the light, there was a car in front and a car behind... normal acceleration. We were taking a left so I let off the throttle as we took the corner (again, car in front and behind!). As soon as we got around the corner and I gave a bit of gas (bit... car still in front, wasn't in the mood for a Honda hood emblem), an enormous cloud of thick white smoke came belching forth from the exhaust. This was 10pm, just street lamps and headlights to judge the smoke color through the auto-dimming rear view mirror, but it still appeared to be pure white, not blue-white or black'ish. I had a fairly good look at it because it was sooo thick I could just barley see the highlights of the car behind me peeping through my "James Bond-style" smoke screen. If this amount of smoke had come from the tires I might have felt differently!

As we drove down the road, my mind replaying the day searching for a memory that could help explain this rather disturbing event... it happened again!! At the next traffic light! Similar event, deceleration then a bit of gas. Pulled over to administer a "sniff" check to the tail pipes, no real pronounced aroma certainly not a burning oil smell. So, home I went gentle all the way. Once in the garage, I gave the pipes another smell test and wiped my finger around the inside edge of the tail pipe. No real pronounced smell, it was several miles to get home. There was a bit of black residue in the tail pipes, maybe just from a rich fuel program?

This morning I checked the oil (dip-stick and fill cap) for signs of the "milky" evidence of coolant in the oil. No sign of coolant in the oil, however I did notice a few small metal shavings on the dip-stick, 950 miles... time for that first oil change!

One thing that did happen yesterday was a shifting glitch. I was leaving the neighborhood in Sport Mode (A6). As I pulled on to the main road I gave her some throttle, the car quickly went past what I expected for a shift point. I let off the throttle somewhere between 4500 and 5000 RPM, let it slow itself down, came to a stop, started over again. Everything settled down and it shifted as expected for the rest of the day. I just assumed that the car was under the impression that I was next to a Mustang and wanted it hold on to those shift points.

Based on the what happened later that evening, I'm wondering if this car has a vacuum modulator on the transmission that is having issues. This could perhaps explain the shifting glitch and if the modulator pulled to high of a vacuum perhaps it sucked some transmission fluid through the vacuum line into the intake manifold and from there into the combustion chambers.

The car is stock except for GM Performance mufflers.

Needless to say, the car is going back to the dealer for a check-up! They better have a realistic explanation and not a dealer SWAG.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Its normal, nothing to worry about. Like others have said, also the paints and metals on the engine heating up for the first time or even third time are still burning and fuming off. I even noticed this when i went to test drive some new hondas, yotas and nissans shopping for a future vehicle ( until i found the camaro of course) and they all had the same white smoke when test driven. This is all just coming from what ive always experienced with freshly built vehicles. I wouldn't worry it all should be normal enjoy your ride

Water in intake - car washed? Puddles? Remove air filter and check for moisture in filter box.

Head gasket leak - chemical test can reveal leaks where there is no oil contamination.

Among other possible causes.

I've got the 6 speed auto with 1600 miles. I tried to do a burnout with my foot on the brake,as I gave it the gas,it was belching gobs of white smoke. i took it to the car wash and tried it again, this time with no foot on brake and I still got white smoke, but not as bad.

Before the lifters were replaced did your car idle rough at a light. And if so does it still do it.

Check each sparkplug for oil contamination in the combustion chamber. If one looks different than all the others, you have narrowed your problem down to that cylinder.

Dealer replaced all 16 lifters. Oil in the intake. Apparently an "over aggressive" lifter will build-up pressure that gets vented through the valve cover (similar to the old PCV valve). Oil gets vented into the intake and then into the combustion chambers.

Did 4 burnouts today and could not duplicate white smoke. Put car in garage and revved to 4 grand and held it there,no smoke. Does anyone know if this is a re-occurring problem or just occasional?

There is another thread on this subject that includes a generic service bulletin on the issue. I had excessive bluish white smoke, rough idle, and severe hesitation. Dealer is replacing the lifters.
