pulled over for tint in Plano this morning

Of all things to be pulled over for... He didn't give me a ticket for not having a front license plate. That is what I was expecting when he pulled me over because I wasn't speeding. He did mention it was law to have one on the front, but didn't give me a written warning.

I put 25% tint on my door windows and because the window itself is tinted, his little meter read 22% so he gave me a written warning. What a way to start the morning!

Except for not having a front plate, I wasn't breaking any laws. He didn't pull me over for the plate, only the tint. I put legal tint on my windows. The window itself must have some tint or his meter is wrong. 25% or greater is legal in Texas.

A lot of windows come with some sort of tint thats why if you put the tint on yourself you dont buy right at the legal amount because it will put you over. Also, if you have the tint done by someone you need to tell them it needs to be legal and for them to test it and prove to you its legal.

Even if he didnt catch you, you probably would have failed your state inspection when it came due.

They must be enforcing that law a little more, I got pulled over last week for the same thing.
My tint showed 27% according to his meter.
Just gave me a verbal warning.

I got pulled over last Monday in Plano as well but for speeding. I was speeding, but a Lexus blew by me and I was the one who got pulled over. He also did not say anything about a front plate.

I guess since our cars stand out they are paying more attention to us. It also does'nt help that my car is orange.

Also, that's not always true... I've been pulled over because the officer thought I didn't have my seatbelt on. He followed me for 2 miles before pulling me over, so I'm not sure how he didn't noticed I had it on the entire time. When he came to my window he stated, "I observed you not wearing a seatbelt, but I don't know when you put it back on." Then proceeded to write me a ticket. All I had to do was show up, and speak with the DA for a moment to get it dismissed. She stated that they were having issues with many of the tickets he had been writing. Just like any workplace, most are great, some are jerks, and you can get pulled over for nothing if you get a jerk.

In this case, I would take it back to the shop and ask them to test it. If you asked for legal, and you got a warning for it being illegal, the shop should fix it. Where did you go? I always take my cars to Tritek.

Did the law change recently? The last time I had my windows tinted (about 3 years ago), I was told 35% was the limit on the front side windows.

It's 25% front sides.

Does sound like something a judge would forget. Just tell judge you told installer darkest legal and it's not your fault.

That's probably why he gave you warning cause in court you probably would of got a dismissal.

I guess so... Here's the txdot website where it says 25% http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/Misc/faq/tint.htm

I think most auto windows are already about 17% tinted - i also found out the hard way one time but the car was registered in Ohio where tint law is much more restrictive.

unless I read the post wrong you were at 22% which is illegal whether you knew it or not? So I would be very happy especially since you didn't know that he only gave you a warning. Also the laws says you have to have a front plate and you don't and it sounds like you knew that because you thought that is what he was pulling you over for. He didn't even give you a warning for that. I am not trying to sound like an a-hole and that isn't how I would want to start my week but I just am confused as to what you are upset about

I got them put on a couple of weeks after I pickup my car. The stripes on the front have a factory flaw and have to be replaced.

I came by your work but you were not there. I have'nt had a lot of free time to get back up there. Are you going to the Sonic meet this Thursday?

Oooo ... I believe 35% is the lowest number you can go on the front windows.... that's what they've always told me. Better verify it... I'm goin' with 35% on the fronts (when I get it!!!)

Automobile windows from the factory will block a certain percentage of light. Thus if the law says 25%, and you get tint that is precisely 25%, you will likely fail the test they use. The tint shop should have known this and sold you the proper film. My tint shop knew it and compensated accordingly. In fact, I remember reading this on the TxDOT website...it's the final reading they care about.

Unfortunately, this is probably not the last time you'll have to deal with this, because in Texas checking the tint is part of the state inspection, and they use the same devices the cops do. It sounds like you should expect your car to fail the state inspection when it comes due, unless you change your tint.

If it were me, I'd go back to that shop and make them apply the right film, since you asked for legal and it's not.

The Plano officer said it needed to be above 25% that is why he gave me a warning since it was close.

Your factory windows already cut down the light tranmission. If I remeber correctly, all of the Camaro windows have a stamp/logo that says 70% light transmission. If you put 25% tint on top of that, you'll be under the legal limit of 25%.

I told my guy I wanted to stay legal and he said 35% was the lowest he could go since most factory glass already has a slight tint to it. 25% on top of that would be less than 25%.

So does anyone think that my tint will fade over the next 2 years before I need inspection? 22% is so close to 25%, I hate to change it if the sun is going to fade it... What is the next step up in tint? 30%?
