Borla Catback exhaust questions

Hey all,

I was looking to upgrade the sound of my exhaust and I was liking the Borla sound. I was curious if anyone had heard the S-type and the Atak side by side. I want louder but not annoying. Any thoughts between the two? I haven't done anything with my headers yet and probably wont for another year or so.
Thanks!

Best bet is to listen to this video, Borla goes through the touring, s-type, and atak models in cabin and outside to test the sound levels. Preferably for me at least, S-type is where it's at, but take a listen and let me know if I can help out any further

I did look at those and they had me leaning towards the S-type as well. It's just hard to tell on crappy laptop speakers. Haha!

I had that problem too with these speakers, but I plugged my laptop into my home theater system at home, and pissed off some neighbors for a bit, it sounds THAT good.

Liking the Borla S-Type sound. I have a 2014 SS/RS and looking at that system, but just want to go as far as getting the sound and alittle bit more hp without tuning. Wat is needed and where ould I look to buy.

Thx

I was in the same position as the OP and went with the Borla S-type. Barely noticeable inside the cabin, great sound from the outside but it does have some drone. Borla is unfortunately known to have some drown, I experience it between 1700 -2000 rpms through most of my shifts.

Ive had both. The atak sounded great without headers... but was a bit much to me with. I love my S-type with the headers, best sounding exhaust with headers IMO.

Still looking for advise on the S-Type and where to purchase and exactly which set-up to avoid any type of tuning at this time. Will look into headers after warranty runs down, just want the sound now...thx.

Cat back systems alone require no tunes regardless to which system you do.

Thanks guys. Anyone think I can get GM to pick up part of the cost? I brought my car in before I put it away for the winter because of a rattle in the exhaust and the dealership said they had to replace the exhaust from the cat back and that GM would pay part of the cost for the OEM parts under the GMPP or whatever it was.

I had the same issue. All they were gonna do was keep replacing the stock muffler. Decided shortly after my 2nd set of mufflers messed up that i was gonna try the atak.

Out all the exhausts I heard so far and online the Borla S type imo sounds the best.Hopefully with just the axelback some of the drone will be lower.

I have Borla LT's and Atak absolutly love it it is very loud though. I ran the Atak w/ the factory manifolds for a few months and it sounded great as well. If your trying to be a little more suddle I would go with the S-Type IMO

Aside from price, what the advantage/disadvantages of the axle back over the cat back?

I like having a direct connect, meaning if I'm replacing the exhaust I want the entirety of the factory exhaust gone, so Long tubes with an x-pipe that then bolts onto the catback. If it's an axle back, you've still got old piping from the previous exhaust. Not necessarily bad, but it helps with overall flow. Most of the mid pipes on MOST cars are crushed piping which restricts flow because it bottlenecks at the area of the crush. Another benefit is if resonators come into play. Resonators don't flow very well. They're not as bad as catalytic converters, but they still bottleneck exhaust flow. A lot of aftermarket exhausts don't have crushed pipes or resonators like the one pictured below is a good example of a crush pipe ON a resonator, so just imagine how terrible that is (you guys get to laugh since it's on a mustang. poor guys):

Hope that helps!

So the ...Borla S-type (Stinger) Catback Exhaust w/ X-pipe would be the best way to go and not have to do any tuning then?

Yeah, you can hold off on the tuning until you get long tubes if you ask me, it's not really needed right off the bat with a catback.

I'm stealing someones picture off google, so I apologize if it's someones picture here that didn't want me to use it. Anyway, you can see with the picture below the factory exhaust, and a set of ARH Long tubes:

The exhaust flows so much easier though the header you see on the bottom, you can just see how many sharp angles are in the factory manifold, along with the catalytic converters in there which really slow things down.

So the catbak connects to the headers then.
So until I get new headers (voiding any warranty), I wont need to tune anything till then.
Will installing the catbak without a tune have any long term effect, or things will work fine?

Thx
