86 5-speed 350

i have an 86 z28 350 4 bolt with a 5 speed. i have heard these trannies suck.is there any kits to toughn it up.

The T-5s suck big time, but I hope that the engine is a transplant because its not stock.
350s & manuals didnt come stock in the 3rd gens & 350s didnt come from the factory until 87.

The biggest flaw with the T5 (in my opinion) is the weakness of the case itself. Sure you can build it with the strongest gears, but if the case flexes, you're boned. I would find a built T56 from a 93-97 Fbody. It's a fairly common swap, similar bellhousing bolts right up.

Bump for interest. As far as bolt patterns go on the T-56 and T-5 if you build up an 80s 350 should they bolt? Or have they changed them over the years (LT is a 350 in a sense so I would guess no?)

i believe they will bolt up, but not 100% sure
i've heard of guys running a 700r4 behind a gen3 motor, so that's what makes me believe it can happen

Good to hear. I don't want to fuss with a mix/mash harness under the hood if I ever do a 350 swap. Hopefully I can also reuse the t-5 bell housing. Anyone hear of THAT being done? I mean it seems easier which is why I'm throwing it out there..

t5 bellhousing wont mate up to a t56.

I blew up a t5 before, but it wasnt really the transmissions fault. You have to think about what it was made for. A 240hp car.

From what I heard the WCt5 is way better. I would use the t5 and if it ever gernades (usually just from abuse) then go the lt1/t56 route.

Another option would be to buy a TKO-500 or 600.

Will fit in exactly where your T5 was, but rated for 500 or 600 ft*lbs respectively.

Cost was 3000 and change when I had one quoted for my 86 IROC.

P.S. - that 3000 included 2100 for the tranny itself and about 1000 for the kit/options to make it a direct fit for the 3rd gen camaro.

Eh. I may just do a turbo setup for the 2.8 in the car I'm looking at. Get it up to about 230hp-ish at the most since the car has no real bulk added. But down the line that T5 and 2.8 are going out in favor of a 350/whatever.

I need tha' grumble~
