Funny thing happen today

So i was at work and one of my junior sailors came up to me and said he wanted to race me on a track course.
Of course i smiled cause i know he has a stock RX8. The guy next to him said
" You do understand he has a 1LE right?"
He said " O i thought you had a V8. Nevermind"
Once i got up off the floor from laughter, i explained to him that the 1LE was a track ready V8.
He said he still thinks he would beat me due to the RX8 having a great 50/50 weight ratio.
I walked away laughing and told him to just tell me what day.

there's always people like that... My buddy's brother keeps telling me he's got $250 that says his 2000 duramax will leave my 1LE in the dust... But I don't want to drag race a truck on the streets

A really good driver in either of those cars would be surprisingly quick.

Watch out for some of those Diesels my brother in law has a 04 F-350 single cab that pulls 12.2 in the 1/4

I could swear the 1LE also has very close to 50/50 if I remember correctly. Sure feels like it does, and that's coming from a former EVO owner.

guys got jokes, we had a Turbo RX8, running Toyo R888's and Tein 3way coils on the track at Toronto Motorsports Park at one of the track days I went to, he was 6 seconds a lap slower than my 1LE, also lapped faster than an Audi R8 V8, AM Vantage V8 and a highly modded SN95 Stang.

All the import guys see if a heavy V8 muscle car and think no way it can corner.

The driver is a pretty big factor on a road course, but a 1.3L RX-8 would have a tough time keeping up with a stock SS IMO

Diesels can be real quick! But he has a handheld tuner and exhaust... Also has a big lift and 37's on a extended cab long box.... I told him if he really wants to I will run him at a track but not for money and not on public roads

rx8's, especially stock, just seem so slow. aren't the rx7's faster than rx8's on the track?

+1 I test drove a RX8 before I bought a G8 and the RX8 felt really slow in a straight line. around the bends it was good but not 1LE good

the RX8 is a great car for AutoX but lacks the power to dominate a road course or to keep up with the big boys. You need to make a bet with him, loser pays for the winners track day fee.

A little too much discounting of drivers in this discussion, but agree that with equal drivers, the 1LE would absolutely annihilate a stock, or even not so stock, RX8.

Back to the driver thing though, I haven't watched it in a while, but there was a great video on YouTube of Doug Hayashi (of NSX-Files fame) in his relatively stock Honda S2000 (only mods were tires and pads IIRC) just walking away from a Ferrari 355, a 360 Challenge Stradale, and he would catch an F50 in the twisty bits but lose him on the banking (believe this was a track day at California Motor Speedway in the SportsCar configuration).

I just Googled the video but can't find it, here's something I did find though, an S2000 being held up continuously by a couple of 360 Challenge Stradales:

It's the driver more than the car.

Amen.......in 90% of the cases of cars on this forum, the most important mod is the fool (present company included) holding the wheel! Instead though, a CAI is installed!

Driven one? Phenomenal car. My best friend is a track instructor with the BMWCCA. A first-timer brought one out to play at Limerock and my buddy got to instruct him in it and later drive it on the track shortly. He bought one that night.

I've driven his extensively and I've got to admit, it is damn near perfect. If I lived in an area with closer access to good roads, I would have bought one instead of the 1LE. But with the significant amount of highway I have, I opted for something with a bit more grunt that could be fun on an on-ramp (doesn't hurt that I'm a sucker for the sound of a clean SBC).

Owned both a stock RX8 and the 1LE. Tracked the RX8 before and, with the same driver, it won't stand a chance on a road course vs the 1LE. Unless you stay above 4000 RPM in the RX8 (redlines at 8000 RPM if I remember correctly) it has poor acceleration.

The issue is not the car. The performance difference between the two vehicles is there, no question. However, anyone who has tracked their car for a while knows you can't underestimate any kind of vehicle because you just don't know the capabilities of the driver. Granted, it doesn't sound like the guy that owned the RX8 was really experienced, for some reason. However, how many times have you seen a supercar on track being driven at less than it's potential? Many.
