Whats the deal with Plastics?

ok first off, I have yet to see the interior of a camaro with my own eyes... i have only seen the outside passing by on the street... i keep reading about how certain plastic panals looks very cheap and some other plastics also? ...

so what exactly is this plastic panal... or ugly looking plastics that i keep hearing about... does anyone have pics? and is it possible to modify this and change it to idk, gloosy wood or leather covered plastic, or something that doesnt look as cheap?

im a big fan of this car and i kind of dont believe that something on it looks cheap

We have plenty of pictures here showing the interior. I can tell you that most people who see the interior (import owners) love the interior.

There are people out there who apparently fondle their interior panels while driving. They don't think the plastics are soft enough.

My favorite thing about the interior overall is that this interior is entirely specific to the Camaro. There is no interior on any other GM car, or any car for that matter, that even comes close to looking like this one. GM did a spectacular job designing this car. Shows what you can really do in 8 years' time.

Challenger interior =

There is not much going on in front of the passenger seat.

the interior panels, some people find too hard and not ergonomic enough. Mine has been nothing but awesome. Also... easy to clean, and dust.

Yeah but the Equinox has borrowed a thing or two from this car and a thing or two from the Buick SUV and mixed it together.

But who really spends a lot of time in that seat anyway? It doesn't look bad at all though.

My friend, I am sorry, but i disagree with you. This arguement has been going on since the first days the Camaro was under development. I pretty much remained neutral on the issue. But there are a lot of people, who percieve hard plastic dashes as cheap. It is that plain and simple. I goes way back to the old days when padded dashes were first coming into vogue during the '50's.

It was a sign of luxury and upper level models. When the FEDs added many crash requirements, virtually every dash made during the late '60s and through mostly until the early to mid 2000's had soft materials on the dash.

I remember when I was a kid a cushion (i.e. Padded) dash was a pretty darn nice upper level addition to any auto.

It isn't about fondling the dash. Its about perception of quality. Take a look at the latest Malibu. That to me is one of the best looking dashes of recent GM products.

But, I guess we will just have to disagree. That's what makes this site a good one as long as disagreement is kept civil.

True, but what I was kind of referring to was how all Chrysler vehicles have the same interior. I swear, the first time I saw a Challenger dash, I died a little inside. The first thing in my mind was my mom's Sebring looking almost identical aside from color. That cured me on the Challenger, pity because the exterior of that one is beautiful.

Yeah - that's pretty pathetic.

OH NOES!! TEH INSIDEZ OF TEH CAMAROZ IZ HARD PLASTICZ!!

Really, I sat in one, next to a guy who complained "This IP needs to be Soft" To which I asked him "Do you feel this up or something as you go down the road?" It just makes no sense to me. The interior is fine, The only negative about it is that the passenger side is a little sparse, but if your Shotgun passenger is bored make em read off the center gauges to you!

The only complaint I have with the interior materials is wherever you touch them it leaves some kind of white residue (alright, keep the jokes clean! ). Seriously though, I find myself having to clean the console cover where my elbow rests and the door panels way more than I'd like. What gives? I don't wear a bunch of lotion or anything. Anybody else notice this?

This car is AWESOME, Simply Awesome, pretty much ANY car you but today has plastic interior, even if you are buying a Woody Station wagon, the days of metal dash boards are over. The question I have is if the could come up with something different, say Carbon Fiber, what you pay the extra money. Remember this is a production vehicle not a one off show car. While I do not pretend to be an expert on automotive design I truly think that this car is Awesome from the front fascia to the tailpipes. The quality and care that is taken by the fine folks in Oshawa is simply amazing.

And will I am on the rant one more thing. If you purchased a car you never saw it's your fault. I did and I love it, but there were plenty of shows available to go and see this car in person so if you spent 35 k without looking please don't complain, you had the opportunity to go and look. May have not wanted to spend the money to go but there was an opportunity.

It just annoys me a little that there is so much complaint over this wonderful car, It is a First year model and there will be issues, so what, they will fix them. The only car I have ever saw that was perfect was a Riddler Award Winner, before it was drove.

OK I'm better now, lol

This thread has several good pictures of the dash

The plastic around the gauges and on the steering wheel looks cheap, but you can't please everyone all the time.

I've always thought glossy wood was tacky.

The inside looks very clean to me.

I'm a tough customer to please and the more I'm in the intrior, the more I love it. If GM truly wants Chevy to become the entry brand, then all the IP's and door panels should be made of hard plastic to keep the costs down. I would only change that rule for the Corvette.

If you want a soft touch IP and soft door panels, go buy a Cadillac.

Thats because when you crashed your faced became friends with the dashboard in the late 60's, so having a soft material was nice. Now when you crash your face hits a big air filled pillow coming at you from all directions, therefore the dash doesnt need to feel like your dr. scholl inserts.

the problem is not really the "feel" or even the look IMO. its more about when there are temp variances in the cabin and if open the center consul, the cheap hard plastic tends to creak and make noises. this also happens when you are driving along and hit some bumpy road or make a turn in to drive way... you start hearing the dash and everything creaking.... very annoying.

a girl i work with has a CTS and it has the same problem and its only a year old...

honestly i don't care what it feels like because i don't rub my dash while i'm driving but when i am hung over Monday morning and i have the the radio off and i'm trying to have a quite ride to work i will start hear creaks from the panels and dash...

Eye of the beholder- you gotta look and make your own decisions on that.

so what exactly is this plastic panal... or ugly looking plastics that i keep hearing about... does anyone have pics? and is it possible to modify this and change it to idk, gloosy wood or leather covered plastic, or something that doesnt look as cheap?

You can change just about anything in a car if you have the cash to do so

im a big fan of this car and i kind of dont believe that something on it looks cheap

It doesn't look cheap- it looks competitive with the cars it's designed to compete against. However if you compare a 35000 Camaro to a 35000 Volvo, BMW, Audi (insert upscale brand here) the Camaro comes up a little short. However the Camaro has a lot of other things going for it. The only thing I really don't like about the Camaro interior (and most modern Chevy's) is that they insist on a unique stereo with way too much integration so you have to pop 150 just to get the 'right' harness. Otherwise, I like them a lot.

And that's my opinion- and I'm sticking too it.

Yeah, it's got a lot of things going for it that most other Volvos, BMWs, and Audis have going for them. I bet it would smoke them in a quarter mile, both cars bone stock.
