GMPP Exhaust melting my car!

Pics shown! Got them installed at my dealership (Pohanka Chevy of Chantilly, Virginia). I called and told them they were melting the plastic BEFORE I had my NOWEEDS diverter installed. They are now saying the Diverter is the reason that it's melting because having those installed moved the axle-backs...even though I called before they were installed. Terrible dealership, BTW

Hmmm, seems like the pipes should stick out some more. Have you tried to loosen them and bring them out some more?

I didn't install it. Dealership did. I asked him if that may have been it. He said "my guys always put it on right. Perfectly centered and put on the exact amount. They slide back and then you clamp it and when you put those bolts on, they don't move."

AKA they did and wont fix it.

edit: Also, bring it out more would just make the melting be visible from the back...=\

Mine is not doing that. What really looks bad is what the heck is all the high heat looking stuff on the top of the tips. I mean it looks like you have alot more heat in the exhaust that far back and you have lots of spots inside your tips.

YOUR DEALER IS AN IDIOT. I have the same exhaust and I put mine on myself. Yours is not sticking out far enough. You have about 2" of play if you cut your exhaust where the instructions say cut. And you can easily push them in to far and get this as a result. I would go down there and let some heads roll if it was me.

Should have taken it back before you modified their work by installing the diverter-they've found an out and unfortunately you probably are stuck. Sorry to hear of your problem.

Can someone post a pic of how far out the GMPP exhaust tips should stick out (if that's the issue).

I now have concerns that mine might not be out far enough.

Guys, your 2 inchs of play is at a 45 degree angle. That is to center it with the hole. You are not going to have alot of back and forth movement on how far they stick out. Look at how the top of his tips have burn marks forming. That exhaust has something done to it making it hotter back there than it should be.

He modified the exhaust though with divertors. I think that voided the exhaust warranty and could be causing the big heat issue.

Looking at those pictures, the tips do not look centered in the hole. Maybe it's just the angle the pictures were taken.

Yeah mine are centered pretty good, did a 7 mile drive and the plastic is a litte warm but not hot enough to melt. He does look off center for sure as the melt marks if not far enough out should be straight up, not off to the side. So that could be dealers fault there.

Burnt tips still a concern though, mine are not bluing and brown spotting like the top of his are.

Exactly. These pics show the damage (which sucks) but don't help much otherwise because no one can see the actual alignment.

Take some ground level 5 foot shots so everyone can see just how far away from the edges the tips acutally are.

BTW, Pohanka is top of the list in the DC area for Gouging AND zero desire to address customer service. Steer Clear for future warranty work and head to one of the 6 other Chevy dealers close by, like Sterling, Fairfax. No one would miss Pohanka in NoVA if they went under IMO.

Mine were actually set back kind of far. So I just pulled mine out a little bit. As Scott mentioned, they can only be adjusted so far because of the angle of exhaust, etc.
Here's some pics of my exhaust after adjusting it out a little bit. I'm not sure if I can get it to come out any further. I just want to be 100% sure I don't get any melting.

Also, Scott is right. His exhaust does look like it got extremely hot. But that still shouldn't melt the plastic (hopefully). And my plastic after 15-20 minutes of spirited driving did get pretty warm to the touch. But what do you expect being so close to the exhaust system.

This picture makes it look like the exhaust is pretty close, but nothing is changed from the above pictures.

I'm sure his exhaust was centered OK, and that wasn't this issue. To be honest, it would be better to leave a little more room near the top, because that's were the heat is going to come out and do damage.

It looks to me that it was a combination of two things.
1. The exhaust got too hot (for whatever reason).
2. The exhaust is set back a little to far.

Those two things seemed to have caused the problem. For anyone that has the GMPP exhaust, can see how that area of plastic just above the upper corner of the exhaust could be melted if the exhaust got too hot. And the further back the exhaust is set, the higher the probability of that happening. That's why I pulled my tips out as far as I can. I also adjusted them a little off center, so there would be a little exhaust room up at the top in the suspect corner.

I cant see the pics. On a new netbook i got last night, haven't had time to set up completely.

Did ypou or someone else install the diverters? If you had it done by others you should have a dated receipt to show the damage was done before the diverters. Go to another dealer and tell them you will become a loyal customer if they will help you out. Nothing to lose is there?

Those tips look like they are double layered steel to provide an isulating effect, is that correct?

Good idea with the receipt... show them that you called before you even had the other part installed. Your phone log will come in handy too

The tips are NOT centered. That's what I told them may be one of the issues. The service manager swore that "My guys put it in straight always, we don't let it leave if they aren't. It's the diverter that moved them"
-_____-

And trust me, after this I will NOT be going back there.
