Post Z/28 Clone free zone = parts restriction

GM has just announced, in an effort to prevent Z/28 cloning, approx 40 specific Z/28 parts will be restricted:

With the launch of the new Camaro Z/28, approximately 40 different Z/28 specific parts will be placed on restriction. This action is being taken to protect the vehicle’s brand and customer’s investment by preventing the “cloning” of the Z/28.

Dealers will be required to obtain specific vehicle & owner information before any parts order request can begin.

Part orders for the restricted parts will be monitored and reported to the Camaro Program Team, GM Regional Warranty Managers and appropriate Field personnel.

Z/28 parts replaced for warranty, will be requested back through the parts return process, for analysis.

This was the case back in '87 with the Buick GNX

In other words, GM is going to charge you out the *** if you need to replace those parts. Not to say I would do any different, but its likely a multitude of factors since it appears there will only be 2 years of limited production on the Z/28 they don't want to hold onto a warehouse of specific parts when production ceases. It just happens to also be a great marketing ploy.

Having owned several cars... including the aforementioned GNX... which were either parts restricted or which the manufacturer eventually stopped supporting, I would highly recommend anyone who plans on keeping their Z/28 for any length of time to stock up now. There is no downside to doing that; either you will need the part or you will be able to sell it for more than you paid for it once GM stops making them.

Restricting parts to prevent cloning sounds great now, but ten years down the road you will realize it sucks when the part you need is unavailable from GM and you have to hunt it down and pay the outlandish new market price.

And that WILL happen.

Been there, done that and, like I said, a smart person woiuld stock up now.

Good insight. What unique Z/28 parts would you suggest to stock up on?

Those front splitters are going to be in high demand.
Those things are going to be damaged within a year for sure if you drive the car.

We make a rub guard washers that go under to take the scraping, just we do for the ZL1 and 1LE

Do you think the parts you have for the Zl1/1LE will work on the Z/28 ? if you look at the pic of it on the side the bolts are in the rear of the front bumper not the front.

Well, if true, this just instantly added $$$$$ (I'll venture $10k-$15k) to the value of a Z/28. Should pretty much lock-in minimum, immediate, $100k resale on a 2014 for sure.

40 part numbers on restriction is huge. For anyone who hasn't figured out what is happening...you are too late. One of *those* opportunities just occurred and you slept through it.

At this point, I'd think even $10k-$15k over on a 2015 is still money in the bank a year from now.

Maybe in 20 years they will be worth that, there going to depreciate pretty rapidly in the first 5-10 years just look at the ZR1 Corvette. All this does is create a higher expense for those that will need replacement parts. But I guess I won't complain if I'm wrong, I already have a 2015 allocation locked in at MSRP.

They do not go on the bolts of the splitter, they go on just like they do on the 1LE. They screw on. I have already seen a Z28 and the washers are going to work great.
In the pic, the splitter is to the right. It has a somewhat flat bottom unlike the corvette.
They install on bottom just like the ZL1, both are hollow splitters. The ZL1 has screws that are already to be removed and install the washers, on the 28 you do the same as the 1LE and use a template to install where you want.

I think you are dreaming. Not a chance......

I hope I am wrong, but as I tell the girlfriend that hasn't happened since 1994.

I agree, dreaming. After you pay tax and all it will be a long time if any money would be made. There will be many for sale in a year and you will find them maybe less than MSRP

Scarcity is a primary determinate of value of what would otherwise be a commodity. Chevy just said, by virtue of restricting access to Z/28 specific parts (in addition to a limited production run) they will ensure scarcity.

The scarcity value is further bolstered by performance value. And the last of the production 427's )Stielow said that in the interview posted elsewhere).

In spite of the wishers and dreamers posting how they can build so much more for so much less (fail), this car is a once-in-a-decade, fully realized package, fully optimized for one purpose by professionals with resources at their disposal to do it with detail and perfection.

Some of you lucky few may not yet be realizing what is at hand

My guess is that GM will monitor quantity of parts for each vin, duplicate part numbers under the same vin will throw a red flag.

Warranty parts will need to be turned in, hard to force someone to turn in an old part if they are paying cash... unless they place a core charge or "exchange price" policy on the part, not unheard of.
