Transmission stuck @ 5500RPM

So... here's the background...

2SS L99 (Auto)

Was doing around 70MPH, and some guy was being a complete ass in front of me. So, I passed him on the left, slamming the accelerator down to pass him. The transmission downshifted to accelerate and hit around 5500 RPMS.

Once I passed the fellow, I took my foot complete off the gas to slow down from around 85-90MPH.

The car quit accelerating, but the RPM's stayed spiked at 5000+. I just heard the engine stuck in a high rev mode, even though I wasn't giving it any gas. So, I kept tapping the accelerator until it finally started to down shift in to the appropriate gears for each speed/RPM level.

Please tell me this is not normal......?

I'm leaving for a road trip in our SUV tomorrow down to Myrtle Beach... and I don't want this hanging over my head for the next week :(

Not normal at all. I would have it checked out by the dealer immediately. YOu said you passed on the left so, I am curious, you didn't happen to accidentally hit the cruise control button with your left hand when you turned the steering wheel that way, did you? That could be it.

Definitely not.

Maybe you bumped a Tapshift button, putting it in manual?

Have you been able to duplicate the issue again? Did you inspect the gas pedal area to make sure the pedal is not catching on anything when it is floored? You don't want the throttle to get stuck ever, that is a pretty dangerous thing. I am not sure if the Camaro throttle is fly by wire or the old tech link/cable system. If fly by wire, nothing you can do but take it to dealer. If link/cable system, you can spray some lube on the linkages while you move the pedal.

By your description, it is a bit hard to tell, but these newer tranny's (particularly in sport mode) will hold gears like many people are not used to. In my CTS, if you floor it, then back out of it, it will hold the gear as if it is a manual car. After maybe 10 seconds, it will upshift again. This sounds to me like what you are describing. It is strange to get used to, but it is like that to keep the tranny from upshifting immediately after you let off the gas, giving you a sportier feel.

Also, if you pay attention, just coast down from 40mph or so and you should feel it downshifting. I think it is pretty sweet!

Good explanation. That's exactly why I asked. I've seen this in my car as well. It's completely normal.

No seriously, that's not good. I wouldn't drive it until you get it into the dealer.

I think the car should still decelerate if he lets of the throttle.

Could be it.
I had an 06 GTO (Automatic) and LS1 z28 (Automatic) and they both would sometimes hold rpms high after nailing the gas and then quickly backing out of it.

And my Camaro actually did it yesterday. I nailed the gas for a few seconds and them lifted and the rpms stayed high for a few seconds.

My LT1 auto will do something like that too. As it has downshifted into passing gear, if I lift off the gas before it upshifts, the rpms hold (though lower rpms than when the accelerator was pressed) and the trans then upshifts to the next gear. I've been in other auto Z28's that did this too. I think that is normal operation, but not sure if that's your situation.

Former CTS owner here and it will hold gears for a long time in sport mode. I loved it.
